Cary Audio CD 306 SACD player (non Pro version)
@grannyring - everything is repairable, well almost.  Depending on the damage to the board, we have been successful running wires under the circuit boards to connect broken solder traces.  It is work but it can be done.  Bill reach out to me regar...
Cary Audio CD 306 SACD player (non Pro version)
@dilatante - The two we modified were Cary 306 SACD players. I have never had the pro version or any other version you mention.  Cannot imagine that the difference would be that significant to what we did to the non pro version.  In stock form tha...
Cary Audio CD 306 SACD player (non Pro version)
@dilatsnte correct. I have never had the pro model but it would have to sound a whole lot better the the non pro unit as the non pro unit was nothing special to our ears. Not sure what the price differential is either. Once we got one in yo upgrad...

Sensitivity 86 v 90
Ok my recent experience driving 83 db speakers.  Repaired a class A single ended triode amp 28wpc.  To our disbelief, it drop the crap out of those speakers.  So there is much theory about this subject, some times it doesn't always add up.  Go fig...
How much does a DAC do the more expensive it is?
@ghdprentice  I have a different option on some of the major brands you mention.  Parts quality are mostly nothing special IMO and in general I'm not too impressed with the use of circuit boards.  Most have good looks and sound better that mid- fi...
Cary Audio CD 306 SACD player (non Pro version)
@dilatante I picked up a used Cary 306month ago. Modified the power supply section close to 100 capacitors and resistors. New laser and Redbook sounds awesome. Not impressed with the unit in stock form at all. For solid state it is simply amazing ...
How much does a DAC do the more expensive it is?
Same old question gets the same old reply.  Price means nothing  design and parts mean everything.  Most people here have never had a reference component in their system.  Reviews mean nothing.  The old Marantz CD-94 still competes in sound qualit...
Speaker Cable Recommendations - Under 2k
cables are system dependent. You don't mention what type of sound your prefer.  My customer has a pair of AQ Rocket 88 cables.  In our systems, they have very good clarity, details, separation of the mid-range and higher frequencies.  In our syste...
How much does a DAC do the more expensive it is?
For the one millionth time price has nothing to do with anything. It's the parts.  Nichicon audio note v-caps ac filter choked, etc.
Do I buy an upscale TT?
Do you have the same phono stage that your friend has?  If not, then start there.   Happy Listening.
Tube DACs
The DAC is your source.  So if you want your system to sound the best it can, get the best DAC you can.  We prefer tubes so that is our bias.   Happy Listening.
"High end" store snobbery
I will assume to that dealer, you were a tire kicker.  That is why we have the Listening Room in northern New Jersey.  You get to hear reference components, learn about what makes something sound the way it does, bring your own gear to hear how th...
How long do speakers last?
A lifetime and then you can ship the drivers to Bill Legal at Miller Sound in PA to fix them.
