full-scale orchestral music—best test of speakers’ potential?
IMO it is the source that lets the sound become separate.  So the speaker while is has something to do with it, if the source cannot separate the instruments, then the speaker won't do a great job.@Ihasaguy,Just wanted to know if you play the guit...
Modestly priced bookshelf speakers for cabin.
Best small monitors I have heard are the Sony SS-A3 speakers if you can find a pair.
Skeptic or just plain hard headed
Thanks guys (gals?) HA! My partner is an electrical engineer and we always have conversations about stuff but in the end it all comes down to the sound in your own system.I have said many times that changing resistors or a cap or two will do more ...
Skeptic or just plain hard headed
Not sure if this is the best way to break in a cable.  My friend who believes in all of this says 20 hours on and 4 hours off.  I do not have any experience in his recommendation though.I have heard differences but I have never myself been blown a...
Warmer sounding Solid State
Luxman, Harmon Kardon Citiation 12 and XX (the HK XX is one of the best sounding SS amps I have heard if you can find one).  Any FM Acoustics amp.  Depends on your budget.  Older Sony FET power amps, etc.  All the vintage power amps offer that typ...

Tekton Double Impact vs. Vandersteen 2ce sig II
I guess I am lucky that I live in the NYC area.  Lots of people with systems and several audio clubs that gather regularly.  Plus a few in-home audio stores so I get to hear many options.  I also repair equipment and I manufacturer a DAC, preamp a...
Any good reasons to use transistor phono stage and line level preamp instead of tube ?
Nope.Transistors do not sound like tubes.  You can get tubes to be very quiet.  You can get tubes to produce sound similar to solid state in impact, dynamics, clarity, imaging, and more precise, etc."Anything a tube can do, a transistor can do the...

Used audiophile preamp
My friend owned an Audible Illusions preamp and recently purchased the  Primaluna Prologue preamp.  The Prima is much more musical, was more open sounding (bigger soundstage) and was just rally nice to listen to.  For the $2300 list price, it was ...
DIY High pass filters for Vandersteen Model 5A Carbon's?
I own Vandersteen model 5s.  I built my own HP filters.  I have a pair of them with RCA connections.  The pigtails are not the AQ battery wire but they sound the same.  If you want to purchase them I would sell mine and let you try them out.  If t...
Best Preamp New or Used up to $3,000 ??
Since I repair many audio products monthly, you would be hard pressed to find something that has the sound of an old Counterpoint SA-5 preamp.  They can be upgraded with ease to sound even better.  All tube design and they sound fantastic.  Or you...

Capital Audio Fest 2018--show report
Did you get to the Fredrick room with the GT Audio speakers?I would be interested in your opinion on those.
How are you hearing no difference?
4hannons Some very good points made here. I take care quite often to have a friend come help blind test; I also compare over time, and get my wife's "golden ears" opinion until she gets annoyed (humor).I understand and agree that certain component...
