"High end" store snobbery
There's a shop up here in Mass where on Saturday aftrenoons you can bring your LPs to play through their various vintage & high end setups & hang around a bit to talk about the gear: they'll even offer you an espresso or craft beer. That's...
Did the Old Receivers Sound Good?
There’s more to this than just the specs - I have a vintage system of Sansui AU-9500 with JBL L65 & Luxman TT at my summer place. It’s equal parts nostalgia/performance but it brings me just as enjoyable an experience as when I’m listening at ...
Tube DACs
@smoorenc - yeah, I have an older Line Magnetic, LM502ca - really a wonderful piece and once you get the Chinese tubes out of it and toss in some "better" 12au7 or 5814A (Telefunken, Amperex, RCA clear tops, etc.) it really becomes shockingly good...
Really Inexpensive Systems That Sounded Great?
I'll toss another one out there,... vintage is the way to go after the components have been checked and repaired where needed. How about a Sansui, AU-666, used BluSound Node, same Geshelli DAC and a set of a/d/s L780. I've seen all this gear at th...
Really Inexpensive Systems That Sounded Great?
Luxman R-1050, KEF 103.2, Auralic Aries Mini, Geshelli DAC. If you look hard you can put this together for $1500+/ a few bucks. Be HARD pressed to do better. Just my opinion...
I feel bad for Generation X and The Millennial's
Listen, the live music scene is vital, you're just dated and perhaps a bit jaded. There are two new 3500 and 6000 capacity live event facilities in Boston to go with HOB and the many smaller clubs who are also shifting to at least a partial live s...
Those singers you enjoy,....that don't really have a great voice?
Joe Jackson, Richard Hawley, Lucinda Williams, Johnny Cash, Elvis Costello, Jonathan Richman (Modern Lovers), Christie Hynde, Ryan Adams, Joe Strummer,... there's kind of a lot if you really think about it.
Favourite Guitarists
@bdp24 Yep, I did... very sorry. Harrison's manhandling of a Gibson, SB is otherworldly
Speakers that are good with tubes
Any model by the long defunct Equation brand. Have some Equation 7 and honestly play better than MANY of the Harbeth, Spendor & Rogers speakers I've been used to. If you come across a set, buy'em.
Favourite Guitarists
Guys, how are we missing George Harrison, Derrin Nauenforf and PRINCE. Has anyone seen his rendition of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" from the R&RHOF? Love Mick Ronson and Johnny Thunders. How about Joe Perry & Neil Geraldo (underrated) t...
HELP!!!! Newbie looking for a decent 2 channel power amp in the $1,000 range
Not a lot of pieces I would choose - I'd look for a vintage GAS, Son of Ampzilla. Read the reviews as there's a ton online. Sell in the $7-$800 range and will give you more than you'll ever get from any $1K Emotiva, NAD or Parasound. Just my opini...
What are your top 3 favorite female singers?
Dusty Springfield - Lucinda Williams - Adele - (HM) Chrissy Hinde & Kay Hanley a good Dorchester girl, lol
If there was only ONE album/cd/release you can listen to, over and over.............
+1 for Ziggy but for me it's Jeff Buckley, "Grace" (Bowie on the record wishing he'd wrote this album) and as a dark horse, Big Star, "Live At Lafayette's Music Room". Just amazing power pop that influenced literally hiundreds of bands. That music...
Only two tracks to test your system, forever!
Derrin Nauenforf, "Ghost Town" Live At The Boardwalk and JJ Grey & MoFro, "Lochloosa" Brighter Days. Those are my go-to tracks. Honorable Mention: David Bowie, Ziggy Stardust "Soul Love"
Car songs
Big Star, "Back of a Car" - great memories of that one. Golden Earing, "Radar Love" & The Knack, "My Sharona" - so many!
