Favorite genres for fun listening
For pure fun nothing beats Power Pop. But instrumental Bluegrass played at breakneck tempo is also thrilling, as is Baroque-era Classical keyboard works, particularly when performed on harpsichord.
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often
@wolf-garcia: Well whatta ya know, someone else who considers John DeVore a smug, sanctimonious kinda guy! I haven’t heard any of his speakers (which may sound great; Art Dudley, Ken Micallef, and Steve Guttenberg certainly thought/think so), but ...
Paul McGowan gets asked about rotary subs.
@sandpat: Yup, they’ve gone up to $3200/pr, plus a coupla hundred for a pair of the Sound Anchor base/stand. But that does include shipping within the Continental U.S.A., making them imo a better value than the $3000/pr Magnepan MG1.7i (I audition...
un-becoming an audiophile
@ghdprentice: Amen, brother! @bigtwin: "an activity pursued in spare time". Music is to me "prime time", everything else done in the "spare time" that remains available. How anyone else cares to define "hobby" is immaterial to me. ".....for plea...

@tomic601: Yeah Jim, Richard Vandersteen is not your typical high end audio designer and manufacturer. If I wasn’t a committed planar enthusiasts it would be Vandersteen’s I would probably own. I have listened to music through them for many hours ...
Women Who Rock
I managed to see & hear Janis Joplin live in the Summer of ’67, and she was definitely a force of nature! Unfortunately the rest of Big Brother were as lame a professional band as I have ever seen & heard. I never saw her after she dumped ...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often
In the literature for his Eminent Technology LFT-8 loudspeaker, designer Bruce Thigpen states he can make his LFT driver any impedance he wants, and chose 11 ohms (when implemented in his LFT-8 loudspeaker, the complete speaker---with dynamic woof...
un-becoming an audiophile
@yyzsantabarbara: "I never considered listening to music a hobby." Hallefreakinlujah! I can understand and don’t object to the audiophile pursuit being considered a hobby, but music? If that’s all music is to a person, well, I don’t know what to s...
Were you an audiophile in the 1980s and 1990s?
Thank you @cleeds. I too read Bert Whyte in Audio Magazine, as well as Edward Tatnall Canby (think he was of British ancestry? ;-). I suspect the memory of them will die with us. I started keeping an eye out for Bert’s Everest recordings after le...
Older subwoofers better than newer subwoofers!
My above post was offered in the spirit of the op. I didn't want to bring into the discussion more modern subwoofer designs, such as those of Rythmik Audio. Anyone interested in info on the variable-damping control (as well as other technical mat...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often
When in 1974 I read Ivor Tiefenbrun’s philosophy of the hierarchy of a hi-fi system being that the first component in the chain is the most important, the second is the second most important, etc. etc. etc., I knew he was full of sh*t. OF COURSE t...
Paul McGowan gets asked about rotary subs.
Yep, there it is. By the way, the recommendation of an aluminum wrench is a REAL good one. The magnets in the LFT drivers exert a pretty strong pull on ferrous materials (steel)!

Damn @ericsch, again! I too got a C-26, along with the MC2100, which was the version of the 2105 without meters. $499 vs. $649, iirc. $150 doesn’t sound like much now, but back then I guess it was! From there is was onward and upward: an ARC SP-3 ...
Jim Gordon has Passed On...
In one of his YouTube videos, Bobby Whitlock recounts the writing of the coda in "Layla". Go onto YouTube, do a search for Bobby Whitlock, and all his videos will become available for viewing. He's quite a character!
Older subwoofers better than newer subwoofers!
@joenies: The Janis W1! Man, that takes me back! That sub was popular with QUAD ESL and KLH 9 owners in the 1960's. Gordon Holt reviewed ’em in Stereophile in the early-70’s iirc. A classic!
