RIP Merle Harggard Right at the time one of his signature songs (Okie From Muskogee) was all over the radio, reflecting the extreme divide in the country between young and old, hip and square, stoned and straight, hippie and redneck, left and right (some things neve...
Performer-in-Room Quality with Speakers? I heard the Sanders at last year’s T.H.E. Show in Irvine cerrot, and loved ’em. One of the two best speakers at the show I thought, the other being the Marten Coltranes in the EAR-USA room.
Sonic Barrier damping sheets vs cork I have a friend (Pete Curry, bassist/recording engineer in Los Straitjackets) who put down a cork floor (over concrete) in his studio. Sounds pretty good---cuts down on reflections, but is not too dead. So Geoff, how come no likey lead as mass dam...
QUALITY AND SECURITY OF "LITTELFUSE" PRODUCTS The pony I like is good engineering. It’s funny how the best engineers think alike about a lot of things, and respect each other’s work. For instance, Ralph Karsten (the atmasphere posting here, as most I’m sure already know), Mike Sanders, Tim de...
Linear Tracking Turntables - Best?? One cartridge that plays into atmasphere's point about the lateral versus vertical mass of air-bearing arms is the Decca/London's. The current Londons have a vertical compliance of 15 but a lateral of only 10, making them a good candidate for an a...
Is Maggie 20.1 still overall better than 3.7? Danny Richie (GR Research) just took in a customers Maggies (I think the SMG’s) to redo the x/o with better parts. While he was at it, he took measurements, and found a simple way to improve the speaker’s response by adding a part to the x/o’s low...
Adding mass to the Zeta counterweight All right, I'll give it a try! I just noticed in that same post I misspoke. I meant to say "And you're right, adding mass below the bearings should provide an improvement as the Zeta is NOT a dynamically balanced arm". Thanks for all the ideas fle...
Determining current flow to install "audiophile" fuses. Ha, great point brf!
QUALITY AND SECURITY OF "LITTELFUSE" PRODUCTS At the risk of getting flamed by one particular fellow whose panties get quite wadded at the mention of Roger Modjeski’s name (apparently for not believing in the audible superiority of all audiophile boutique parts.), here’s what Roger found when...
Is Maggie 20.1 still overall better than 3.7? That's how I felt Don. So I bought a pair of Magneplanar Tympani T-IV's to use as (sub)woofers for my Quad 57's (I had a big room ;-). Then I got a pair of the OB/Dipole Subs from GR Research. Wanna buy a pair of Tympani IV's? I don't need 'em any...
Why are record cleaners so expensive? The price it takes to buy a used (or even new) VPI HW-16.5 will get you perhaps as good a record cleaner as you need. Far better than a Spin-Clean and far cheaper than an ultrasonic cleaner.
Best Equipment Stand My God Geoff, what a great idea! I guess the looser the "spring tension" of the bungee cord (the slower it bounces up and down when pressed upon), the better (a lower resonant frequency, obviously). By the way, what's your opinion on the "sandbox"...
Is Maggie 20.1 still overall better than 3.7? Yep Marty, the ET’s woofer is it’s weakness all right (as is the woofer in any and all planar/cone woofer hybrids---with one exception. Read on!). I don’t use it, just leaving the woofer jumpers on the x/o unconnected, running only the panels down...
Bob Dylan MoFi Actually, it is the sound of Time Out of Mind that I find so atrocious, and that as a CD. I haven’t heard it on LP (guess you’re an even bigger fan of Bob than I, Slaw! ;-), and when mentioning it threw in Oh Mercy just assuming it, also being a D...
Subwoofer Regarding cone material.....Rythmik’s Brian Ding recommends AGAINST crossing-over his aluminum coned subs at higher than 80Hz (the built-in Rythmik x/o affords as high a frequency as 120Hz, but that’s for the paper-coned sub), going with the paper... |
