interesting phenomena in the cutting room
Right Myles, the comparison would be of not only the formats themselves, but of the playback gear as well. It was in the latter sense I was suggesting a recording be made available in the three formats. I believe it possible to produce them all in...
Artists' lps that don't get the respect deserved
Yeah Slaw, that first album of Andrew's is a good one. I used to see Andrew around Sherman Oaks (in the valley on the other side of the Hollywood Hills), and once attempted to ask him about a project I heard he was doing with Graham Gouldman, memb...
Should a Jack and Coke be renamed a Lemmy
Instead of drinking a mediocre whiskey and adding a sweetener to it, why not just drink a better whiskey? Johnny Walker Black is much better, and doesn't cost that much more. Besides, adding Coke to alcohol is for girls and sissies ;-).
Bob Dylan MoFi
Geoff, if MF is saying the LP's will be mono, it's highly doubtful Modern Times will be one of them. Mono reissues are always of albums that were originally available in mono, meaning 60's releases. I wouldn't mind contemporary recordings being mi...
If you won the power ball tomorrow night would you
Maybe build a small theater with great acoustics, and hire my favorite artists to come play live for my guests and I. A concert a week, maybe more. Engage Kavi Alexander to record the shows, so we can finally get great music recorded in great sound.
Turntable for life
The first table I was really happy with was a VPI HW-19 Mk.2, but the Townshend Rock is THE table for use with a Decca/London cartridge. Since I will most likely be using a Super Gold Mk.VII and Reference for the remainder of my years, the Rock it...

Audio Research PH6 Phono Stage - How is it?
One great thing about the Herron and Zesto is their versatility. Unlike most phono amps (ARC included), they have separate MM and MC inputs, with dedicated circuits. If you add a high output cartridge to your system, with the Herron and Zesto you ...
Klipsch love them or hate them.
Bob, the thing is the sound heard at most concerts is coming from a PA system, which is what Klipsch speakers sound like. Live acoustic music does NOT sound like that. If a listeners reference is the sound of a PA system, Klipsch should be fine.
Someone had mentioned Christopher Hansen on a thread I read the other day
Taters, I have never been to Sound By Singer, though I have seen Andy strutting around CES (if you've seen him, you know what I mean ;-), but went to Lyric in '83 when I lived in Flushing, Queens. I was already an ARC/Magneplanar owner, and was in...
Klipsch love them or hate them.
Horns provide a very forward, immediate sound, with lots of presence. Too much presence, having a severe "cupped-hands around a mouth"/"pinched nose" coloration that quickly becomes irksome. The worst speakers, by far, I've ever heard for vocals. ...
Someone had mentioned Christopher Hansen on a thread I read the other day
I had forgotten about Christopher Hansen Ltd.. Located in Westwood, it was as high end as you could find on the West Coast, sort of our Lyric. The front of the shop was imposing, with a massive carved-wood front door in the middle of a huge ivy-co...
Footers under big heavy speakers (Stillpoints Ultra 5, Sistrum rack, Finite Elements,..?)
Oops, the last work in the first sentence above should obviously be vertical, not horizontal. Hey Audiogon, what do you have against making edits possible?!
Footers under big heavy speakers (Stillpoints Ultra 5, Sistrum rack, Finite Elements,..?)
As Geoff said, roller bearings give you isolation/decoupling in the lateral/horizontal/rotational plane, but not in the horizontal. As he also said, springs can be used to isolate in the vertical plane. That spring can be a typical metal one as fo...
Footers under big heavy speakers (Stillpoints Ultra 5, Sistrum rack, Finite Elements,..?)
Ball bearings isolate in the lateral/rotational plane (to what frequency determined by the steepness of the wall of the "bowl" they are placed in), couple in the vertical.
