Jefferson Airplane - Volunteers
When I hear the beginning of "After Bathing at Baxters", I am immediately transported back to Lincoln's birthday in the Spring of '68. That album had just began as I was reaching lift-off on my last "flight" ;-). Unlike I, Skip Spence, drummer on ...
Have you ever spoken with a designer or audio engineer
Bill Johnson (Audio Research) was a good engineer who used and recommended Shunyata cords for his electronics. Roger Modjeski (Music Reference) is also a good engineer, and is a power cord skeptic. Roger's electronics are very transparent, and is ...
Mass Loaded Vinyl (MLV) Acoustic Treatments - A Question
MLV has been used for soundproofing cars for years. It's put between the carpeting and the floor boards in the cabin, in the doors and the trunk. It's very effective at that task; effectiveness as acoustic treatment of a room I can't say.
Best Component Ever, for the money
That's IT Schubert! That's the table and exact cartridge (mine was a 91e, though, no d) I bought my self in 1969. I think it was a little more than $65 by then, but not much. It replaced a Garrard SL55, my first table. My amp was a Fisher X-100c, ...
If you could have only one Christmas album/CD, which one?
For Pop, it's "A Christmas Gift For You From Phil Spector", an album of Spector's Phillies Records singers (Darlene Love, The Ronettes, The Crystals, Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans) doing classic Christmas songs plus a newly written (by the lege...
sleeving AudioNote tonearm wiring
Here is something worth knowing: Geoffrey Owens of Helius Designs (U.K. pick-up arm designer/maker) offers his arms wired with copper, silver, and cryo-treated silver. He told me the cryo treatment not only improves the sound of the silver wire, b...
New favorite VINYL Album?
Does "New favorite VINYL album" mean a vinyl album of "new" music, or just an album newly released on LP, even if the music was recorded long ago? If the latter, Mobile Fidelity has finally released a new LP pressing of a great album from the earl...
Old friend looking for acoustic folk inspired music
The first couple of albums by Iris Dement. Kinda Folk, kinda Country, kinda Bluegrass, way more than kinda great!

LONDON Decca, Tzar DST and similar cartridges
Good points, halcro. True, the Decca/London does not have the delicacy in high frequencies of a great moving coil. As with every link in one's Hi-Fi chain, priorities must be chosen, as no one product is better than all others in every way. For me...
LONDON Decca, Tzar DST and similar cartridges
I'll give it a shot, k. The five current Londons---the Maroon, Gold, Super Gold, Jubilee, and Reference, all share the same identical internal design and structure (how could it be otherwise?---it's what makes a London a London!), but differ in th...
If you could have only one Christmas album/CD, which one?
Two sides of the same coin, Schubert ;-)!
Harvey Rosenberg: Did he or didn't he......
"Harvey came to be associated with those mods via his close connection to NYAL". I'll say it was close---Harvey owned NYAL! In his search for the best amp for his Quad loudspeakers, Harvey learned of Julius Futterman and his revolutionary and radi...
What vintage speaker might you use today
As I was composing my post directly above, Doug posted his. Also well reasoned, I second his recommendation to augment the Quad with a pair of subs. But not just any sub---the GR Research/Rythmik OB/Dipole Sub. It is in some ways similar to the on...
What vintage speaker might you use today
Well said trelja! You (and I, and ct0517) are not alone in finding enduring merit in the original Quad when used within its limitations. Yes, those limitations are severe, making it unsuitable for many applications and listeners, Douglas Schroeder...
