What makes you build a system around an amplifier?
ejr1953---Are you sure the speakers weren't merely reproducing the grainy sound of the amplifier driving them? I have found "grain" to be more a product of electronics than speakers.
Best music of 2017
Damn you have good taste, slaw ;-) .
A battle between two turntable generations. Which one is the winner?
Thanks for your thoughts slaw and h-n-t-b, as always. The moving mass interacting with a soft suspension that I spoke of was that of the ET’s arm, which is considerably greater than that of the Trans-Fi. Brooks Berdan came up with that mod of his ...
A battle between two turntable generations. Which one is the winner?
Slaw, I recently got myself a VPI HW-19, the second one I’ve owned. I had an original Mk.1 (with a Mk.2 black platter) in the late 80’s/early 90’s that I was quite happy with, but sold it when I got a Townshend Audio Elite Rock (Mk.2). This HW-19 ...
Best Rock Drummers
dhpeck, shadorne, and roxy54, agree with all ya’ll. czarivey, if by best you mean technically, you have a point. It takes a lot more technique to play Jazz than most Rock, so Jazz players coming to Rock have a distinct advantage. Frank Zappa and S...
What makes you build a system around an amplifier?
Me too Erik. If I still lived in the Bay Area (Cupertino for twenty years), I would go to Modjeski's new operation in Berkeley/Oakland (after being in Santa Barbara for decades), where Roger demoes the speakers.maplegrovemusic---Modjeski is one of...
What makes you build a system around an amplifier?
There are a fair number of people who find the Atma-Sphere OTL's so much better than transformer-coupled amps (more transparent, better bass, more extended high end, "faster") that they are willing to find a speaker that will work well with them, ...
Is it OK to use an 8 Ohm tubed amp to power 16 Ohm speakers?
Modjeski's light-loading recommendation may be based entirely on implementation with his amps. I have found him to be relatively unaware, and uninterested, in what other designers are doing. Interestingly, I found the same to be true of many music...
Room Acoustics
Excellent willemj! The DSPeaker Anti-Mode 2.0 Dual Core comes with a measuring mic, and has a screen that displays the frequency response of the room, room modes often creating huge peaks and nulls in that response, in both the frequency and time ...
What makes you build a system around an amplifier?
An amp and a speaker make a "system", no matter what two they are. They are intrinsically, interdependently-related to each other. A particular speaker prefers (or even requires) a certain "kind" of amp, a particular amp performs better with certa...
What exactly is colored sound?
Commercial recording engineers are endeavoring to make a "good" sounding recording, sure, but what good means to them may be very different from what an audiophile means by good. In all the studios I’ve been recorded in, the engineers have mics th...
A battle between two turntable generations. Which one is the winner?
The TransFi Terminator is very different than other straight trackers, it's very low mass arm wand being just one such difference. And actually, there is a technical justification for an arm having higher lateral than vertical mass, having to do w...
Is it OK to use an 8 Ohm tubed amp to power 16 Ohm speakers?
Roger Modjeski of Music Reference recommends using the lowest tap that gives you enough power for your speakers (almost all tube amps put out less power as impedance descends). He calls this "light loading". You can use the 8, 4, or 2 ohm tap for ...
Speaker cable length with monoblock amps?
Why five feet, rather than, say, four or six? C'mon man, a little common sense is called for.
Speaker cable length with monoblock amps?
I had Kimber make me some 1' silver cables when I had a pair of mono amps. The idea that speaker cables have to be a certain minimum length strikes me as an audiophile myth; I've never read any EE theory supporting the idea. Real short cables can ...
