Tube amp forethought
I have long assumed that when anyone used the term the QUAD ESL they were of course referring to the original electrostatic model Peter Walker introduced in 1957. All other QUAD modes are referred to by their model designation---63, 989, etc., eve...
Why don't Joseph Audio Pearls get more love from the audio press?
IMO, lots of great gear gets ignored, by both the press and audiophiles. Certain "hot" brands get reviewed regularly in mags and on sites, and talked about by consumers. Others---less trendy and fashionable, with few dealers, lacking "sex appeal" ...
Tube amp forethought
If you don't mind the lack of a mono amp behind each speaker (thereby requiring only very short speaker cables---I used one-footers---though long inter-connects, one reason why it's great the M-60 is balanced, as long as your pre is as well), an S...
Linda Ronstadt
@tomic601, the documentary is great, loved it. I was never that big a fan, being a Country purist and all ;-) . I liked her voice, but she always had a Rock band trying to play Country-ish music, which I don’t like (same reason I never liked The E...
Is the dynamic advantage of cones just distortion?
Robert E. Greene in The Absolute Sound, reviewing the Eminent Technology LFT-8b loudspeaker:"Distortion in the ET sounds as though it is down at electrostatic levels---or lower. This seemed to me one of the lowest-distortion speakers in the midran...
Tube amp forethought
I was yet another QUAD ESL/Bedini 25/25 user for years, but if and when I put my QUADS back into service it will be with a Music Reference RM-10. Roger Modjeski used the QUAD as his load when designing that amp. He has offered in in two versions: ...
Which Magnepans for my small room?
Ain’t it the truth, uber. Brings to mind the old joke: Why is divorce so expensive? ’Cause it’s worth it.
Ceramic insulator cone under phono stage shocker!
Mine too, uber.
Which Magnepans for my small room?
It’s great just to see so many planar appreciators in one place! Loudspeakers are the most personal of all the links in the music reproduction chain, and from my perspective, I really don’t understand how anyone can spend more than $6k on a pair w...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
@reubent, then I guess you also missed out on Rockpile (Dave and Nick Lowe, along with Billy Bremner and Terry Williams---a brilliant drummer later in Dire Straits), ay? Probably the best Rock & Roll band I’ve ever seen, and I saw The Who with...
Speaker Imaging - Do you hear a line, or do you hear an arc??
Depends on the recording. The Boult recording of The Planets on EMI contains enormous depth, the tympani, snare drum, and triangle sounding much further away than the wall behind my planars. Way, way, way at the back of the orchestra, up on risers...
Whats on your turntable tonight?
@reubent, did you ever get to see Edmunds live? My ex-wife's all-time favorite show (she had great taste ;-), and one of mine as well. One time with the late Mickey Gee on Telecaster in his band, another with Billy Bremner on second guitar, who wa...
Best rock song of all times
@oblgny, Joan is wonderful live, better than on record. Check out her live-in-studio version of Slim Harpo’s "Shake Your Hips" on You Tube. Very hot! Lou Ann Barton does a great version the song too, another great singer. She was Stevie Ray Vaugha...
Best used turntable(s) around $1500.00 for playing metal and rock
A VPI HW-19 Mk.2/3/4, with a higher mass arm and a London or Decca cartridge.
Best sounding mono recording (vinyl)
The Everly Brothers' Cadence Records recordings. The UK Ace LP reissues are better sounding than those of Rhino Records.
