Amp or Pre-Pro / What makes a bigger sonic impact?
in my experience, both make a huge difference compared to a receiver, but I'd give the edge to the pre-pro if I had to pick one.
What? No Norah Jones New CD Thread?
All this time and I thouht I was alone in my reaction to her. It's interesting to hear I'm not. I love her voice, and some of her songs (I have her first 2 CDs). But to listen to an entire CD becomes boring. I believe it's the songs, and not her p...
Learning the lingo
I agree with Swampwalker - Hartley's book is worth having, and will answer the questions you pose and more. (the complete title is "The Complete Guide to High-End Audio") He also has a companion book on Home Theater - "Home Theater for Everyone".
Looking for insight on the Green Mountain Europas
you should search the archives. Few speakers I know of have received more discussion here. Search on "Europa" - there will be pages of entries.I had a pair, and for the money they're great. I had a pair of Totem Sttafs at the same time and preferr...
HT and 2 Channel System set-up question
I would use the swith box for the sub only in that case. So you take the pre-out from the Mac into the switch, and Sub out from the Yamaha to the switch, connecting the output from the swith to the Sub. I would be less concerned with switch induce...
HT and 2 Channel System set-up question
I'm not sure I follow exactly how you have it hooked up now, but you'd be better off removing the switch box from your system. You don't need it. If you want to use the McIntosh for your front power and Stereo, all you need to do is to connect you...

you may want to contact these guys: MusicTechnology. The do Mods on various equip but I think service anything. I had them repair my Lexicon DC-1. Lexicon wanted $450 to touch it. Bill did it for $110 (power supply replacement)including the part he...
Boxing and shipping BIG speakers? Whats best?
I've never seen the UPS store properly package a heavy item. The items I've received from them that did arrive safely was by luck only and lightweight (eg preamps). I've purchased 2 speaker systems that were packaged by the UPS store, both were da...
Best speaker that you dont need a sub under 1.5k
Von Schweikert VR2's can be found at around $1500 used; VR4 Gen I's can be found for ~$1200; and VR 3's can be found (though more rare) for ~$700 (or less). I have the VR3s and the only down-side is their bulk, but if you really want a speaker tha...
What is the order of rel subs?
The Rel web site has all of this in detail.http://www.rel.net/index2.htm
Sizing room sizes????
I'd say your room is medium size, assuming your ceilings are 8 -9ft. If the ceiling is vaulted, it's more medium-large.
Anyone remember The Warehouse?
I think you're referring to Warehouse Sound - they were in San Luis Obispo, Ca. They had great prices, and a better range of gear than some of the chain outlets (ie the Circuit Cities of the day). I bought my Infinity Monitor IIa speakers there - ...
Best Concert Film
Neil Young "Heart of Gold" - outstanding in every way. I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned already, though it was only released last year.
Totem Arro Vs. Sttaf
I had a pair of Sttafs and think it's hard to go wrong with them. I drove them with several amps including a 30 w/c vintage Fisher tube integrated. They do have reaonable low end, and are very easy to place (though they excell is you can bring the...
