Is the Cary SLP-05 still relavant?
my slp05 was bowing fuses too.  apparently the sovtek rectifier is as unreliable as people mention.  received a mullard gz34 branded as westinghouse, sound has improved, reliability on these is supposedly lifetime.  i listened to an old solid stat...

has anyone noticed the price of used Shindo preamps?  not even close to the OPs budget- if you can find one.
Solid State pre amp / tube amp
yes.  there are several threads on this topic in existence.
Rogue Audio Stereo 100, Atlas Magnum III anybody running them? Sound signatures?
with the st100 shoot for the rogue RH 5 headphone amp linestage.  Great synergy, transparency and dynamics.  Can also take advantage of balanced connections.  wont break the bank either.
Is there a point of diminished returns with amps and Harbeth 30.1s?
+1 for a new cartidge.  An Audio Technica AT ART9 XI for example.

stereo 100 is the amp i never should have sold.  most powerful, muscular 100 watts / channel amp i have heard.  much more powerful sounding than the rogue cronus magnum ii i had, also 100 wpc.  super nice sounding amp.

@decooneyI am using nos sylvania 6SN7 GTA from the 50's, not the vt231.  Love the sound, these are reasonable and readily available.  Even with the stock sovtek rectifier but the sound  did improve with a nos mullard rectifier.

@smodtactical    The Cary SLP-05 is a smooth dynamic performer with a huge soundstage.  It tends to be "phatter" and bassier, I really love the sound.  The Rogue RH-5 is more neutral and transparent.  @rmdmoore I owned the Rogue RH-5 before I boug...
First tube preamp recommendations (under $5k)
Owned the RP7, disappointing sound, did not respond well to tube swaps. Lacked dynamics and transparency. The RH 5 sounded so much better to my ears (yes, the R "H" 5 linestage. Currently using a Cary SLP-05, sounds spell bindingly good.Tube recti...
Parasound A21+ vs MF M8 500S vs Cary 200.2 ES vs Hegel H20
my thoughts on the RP 7 became less favorable after the honeymoon phase, possibly additional burn in.  guilty as charged.  I should have kept the RH 5, I only traded it because I had the opportunity.  the RH 5 is a smaller modest unit with incredi...
Mounting bookshelfs flush with ceiling - can you?
baffle step, right on the money.  ceiling or wall speakers are best.  for the application.encposed speakers can work well near the ceiling on brackets but not flush.
Vinyl guy seeking recommendation for a top level cd player
I have an older luxman D05 and it sounds extremely good, warm and dynamic with smooth detail.  Luxman is due to release more models between the 3x and 10x but if you have the budget the 10x should be outstanding.  I heard the Hegel mohican and hat...

have you thought about an MBL Corona?  I listened long to one and it was phenomenal- better than vinyl, no offense.
Parasound A21+ vs MF M8 500S vs Cary 200.2 ES vs Hegel H20
@dkerr the RH 5 sounded more neutral and transparent than the RP 7.  The RP 7 sounded soft and overly polidhed, rounded off on top despite trying the best tubes to fix it.  i could easily have lived with the RH 5, I traded the RP 7.  The Cary SLP ...
preamp vs amp: relative effect on sound?
they both have an equal effect but an amp or preamp with distinctive characteristics will dominate.
