When someone tells you it's a $40,000 amp, does it sound better?
With great respect, since I'm well-aware of your expertise- is it possible to assign a monetary value to those attributes?  Yes- and depends very much on who is doing the assigning 😉
4 ohm tap vs 8 ohm tap
After a few LP's I began to not hear the bass. So after you all confirmed that I would not damage anything, I switched back to the 4 ohm tao. The bass is back. The suspension of any loudspeaker takes a while to break in. You might try the 8 Ohm...
Why do Tube Amps sound more romantic v SS amps
tube amp sound changes almost every 50hr due to tube emissions degradation, bias-balance degradation., accelerated resistor/capacitor aging, etc This statement is incorrect. Tube amps in general are far more stable than that! With our amps its ...
Why do Tube Amps sound more romantic v SS amps
To understand the dichotomy in tube versus solid state one must start forty or more years ago. Back then virtually all solid state was lean, trebly, and hard sounding. Tube equipment was warm and rolled off the treble and was wooly in the bass. ...
preamp & amp compatibility
@cdtd The output impedance of the DAC is really what the question is. It should be no more than 1/10th that of the amp; so if SE then 2.2K max. Typically If there is an XLR output it should have no trouble driving an XLR input, but in high end au...
Boutique caps in oil... reliable?
I’m a little curious though, is oil-filled the same as oil impregnated? When I think of oil-filled, I think of big cans from the old days. AFAIK they are the same. Oil is used to reduce damage from arcing.
How much does rear horn loading add to full range driver?
What do you think about using good quality 'full range' driver as a midrange in 3-way speakers. What do you prefer for midrange in high sensitive speakers - 'full range' driver or compression driver with horn?  @alexberger In case it wasn't obv...
Advice on a tube tester
I see tested and calibrated tube testers for $1500 on ebay but I think I can get by for a lot less. You probably can- and it will need servicing and calibration. You may well spend the same amount as a result. When testers like that were made ...
Boutique caps in oil... reliable?
We've sampled a number of oil filled caps over the years. I've not seen a type that didn't develop electrical leakage, although I'm sure they exist. Electrical leakage is where the cap takes on some of the properties of a resistor- a voltage can ...
How much does rear horn loading add to full range driver?
It's common ASR wisdom that "fullrange drivers are hot flaming garbage and you should be deeply embarassed to evoke them in any conversation".  FWIW a friend of mine has been struggling with 'full range' drivers for the last 20 years. He keeps ...
When someone tells you it's a $40,000 amp, does it sound better?
Better: Smoother, more detailed, greater center image palpability. Wider bandwidth, particularly in the bass. Greater speed and so on.
FUSE Question...Very Confused Please Help !
@rocky1313 The 250V thing is an arc-over rating and nothing else. For US operation you'll want the higher amperage rating as opposed to overseas operation.
System that sounds so real it is easy to mistaken it is not live
@rauliruegas It might be a good idea to have the suspensions of the drivers renewed. Its hard to imagine drivers that old that are working right unless they are either all paper or use a latex-impregnated cloth surround.
System that sounds so real it is easy to mistaken it is not live
There's probably a Nobel waiting for someone to show the inverse square law doesn't apply to sound from any source. @dogberry In a line source when you are close to the speaker the sound you are hearing is coming from right in front of you. As ...
How much does rear horn loading add to full range driver?
There are true full ranges just because one hasn't experienced one doesn't mean they all require being made into a 3-way. This statement is false, unless you can show me a driver that really in fact does 20-20Khz and not some made-up stuff like...
