How am I frying all my amps? Oscillating? Help
If the Anthem has a stepped volume control, some 'clicking' between steps is likely normal. A stepped control will have a 'make before break' contact scenario, but even with the best materials its normal to get some clicking as you adjust the volu...
YG Acoustics add in Stereophile
S7horton, you are quite right, but having done this a few years, there are certain things that show up from time to time that you get to recognize. If there *was* a capacitor in the midrange circuit, it was very large and very transparent. Those t...
YG Acoustics add in Stereophile
FWIW I agree that to evaluate *the sound* of a speaker at a show is hit or miss at best. But to document a situation wherein a driver bottoms out once a certain combination of frequency and amplitude are met- that is a different matter. The room t...
Headphone Output for Preamp Out.....
The big issue you will run into is you will get a high level of hiss. Other than that it will work fine.

You tell me if this is the 'Best on Earth': I went into the YG room at RMAF with a copy of Peter Gabriel's 'The Long Wlak Home', which is a soundtrack recording for 'The Rabbit Proof Fence'.Track 1, moderate volume, 20 seconds in: the *midrange* d...
Ultra high resolution
i understand the arguments favoring reproducing what is there, no more no less, but very often, a recording is so far removed from reality that you either want to throw the recording out the window, or "edit" the stereo system.i understand your an...
Owners of speakers by obscure companies chime in
Sirspeedy, thanks. Believe it or not some of us in the industry do this because we *like* it :)
How am I frying all my amps? Oscillating? Help
If this Classe has a balanced input and you are running single-ended, **make certain** that the unused pin (probably pin 3, assuming pin 2 is the same as the RCA, refer to the owner's manual for clarity on this point) of the XLR is grounded to pin...
Ultra high resolution
Seems to me there is a message vs the messenger thing going on here. If the message is bad news I don't kill the messenger, in this case, the stereo. The message is the music. IOW I won't fault a system for playing it like it is- that is resolutio...
Quad ESL or Soundlab?
The Sound Labs are very bit the equal of the best Quads, and are capable of greater dynamic range and wider bandwidth. They are harder to drive, so it makes a huge difference as to how good they are going to sound, depending on amplifier choice.Qu...
Owners of speakers by obscure companies chime in
I have a couple of recommendations. First, Classic Audio Reproductions makes a line of highly resolved, easy to drive and very full range speakers that are very close to if not state of the art. I have heard them rival the best ESLs, but with impa...
Balanced versa single-ended
Sashav, I am in fact suggesting that you will want an active line stage. Otherwise you will trade one problem (the loss of resolution as you reduce volume in the Wadia) for another (loss of bass impact and a change in tonality as you reduce volume...
Ultra high resolution
MrT, it seems to me that you would be a fan of the Westminster label. They had a distant mic perspective. Am I right?
Help with finding ultra-transparent pre-amp
We have also found that if you run the Wadia through a good line stage, that it is actually more transparent than running direct. Of course, we do it with tubes, but its all balanced.
The Anatomy of the Acapella Violon - shocking find
Amfibius, based on the results that you posted, it looks like the woofers are in parallel, and so are 4 ohms while the rest of the system is 8 ohms. If this is so there will not be a tube amplifier made that will play the bass at the right level. ...
