Solid State Power Amps That Sound Most Like Tubes? I'm continually surprised anyone would want tube maintenance issues on a tube piece that sounds so close to solid state. The trick is to run a tube preamp that sounds more like music that it does like transistors :)
how does current work in an amplifier? A nice thing to do if you have Magnaplanars and tube amps is to back the amps up to the crossover and use a speaker cable that is as short as possible- 6 inches is a good length, and make the connections as tight as possible. This can have a profo...
Does my Pass amp dislike my Meridian preamp? Bryoncunningham, the fact that it sounds better suggests that someone (not you) has not done their homework... I think your approach here is a good move.If it seems to be OK- you might have the cause narrowed to the computer and the power supply, ...
cartridge loading If your preamp will not allow you to install the resistor, then you have to go with the switch positions they provide. Personally I prefer to do as much loading with resistors as I can, rather than capacitance. I worry about the capacitor and indu...
ZU OMEN speakers 12ohms?? For the most part, one of our S-30 amplifiers and one of our preamps. For 99% of my listening, I can't clip the S-30 on that speaker. The meter barely moves at all.
Solid State Power Amps That Sound Most Like Tubes? If you have ever see a price/performance curve, then you know that tubes and transistors are both mature technologies.Barring unseen innovation, your grandchildren will be talking about the same differences. Is 'same differences' an oxymoron?
how does current work in an amplifier? The are some misconceptions about current. Here's the big one:http://www.atma-sphere.com/papers/myth.htmlOthers have already touched on the serious aspect of this, the idea that for 200 watts you need 7.07 amps (if a 4 ohm load) which is not reall...
Does my Pass amp dislike my Meridian preamp? A loud pop can certainly do damage to the speakers, without necessarily damaging the amplifier.*All* the drivers damaged is a little weird- unless we are talking a smaller 2-way speaker. If it was heavily over-powered by one of these pops, it coul...
cartridge loading If you have a Rega, the motor can be grounded to eliminate the so-called 'Grado hum'. A wire, which can be soldered to the body of the motor, is simply run to the base of the tone arm. This sorts out the hum; no idea why Rega does not install the ...
ZU OMEN speakers 12ohms?? Although I don't own a set, I have heard them with our gear and IMO they are the move that ZU really needed to make! Fast, relaxed, detailed, really easy to drive and the bass is really improved over the Druid. I think they look better too.
Best Balanced Tube Amp To Pair With Meridian G02? Clio09, the circuit you described is for a phase splitter in an amplifier. What I was talking about is something different. For example, usually you are driving such a circuit with a single-ended voltage amplifier. The mod I mentioned is to that vo...
Does my Pass amp dislike my Meridian preamp? Bryoncunningham, its almost impossible to damage a crossover without also damaging the drivers. If there is indeed a crossover failure and the drivers OK, you can be assured that the problem was just in there waiting to happen and it has nothing t...
Think I want a tube system? Sebrof, FWIW, while it is true that tubes manage speakers differently from transistors, you can hear their effects elsewhere in the signal chain. Tubes sound the way they do because they more closely follow the rules of human hearing than transist...
Schroder sq and the new talea The Talea uses a counterweight system similar to the Triplanar- three weights (the last of which is threaded and very small for exacting adjustment).I point this out because it is possible to have either arm set up in a way that does not favor the...
ZU OMEN speakers 12ohms?? In most rooms you will be challenged to clip a 35 watt tube amp on the Omens. They are easy to drive and rewardingly great sound too. |
