Best Class D GaNFET Amp Comparison. Who to invite? The suits ought to learn a thing or two from Ric, but they won’t bother listening to the grassroots from their high towers. Who are the 'suits'?? Why would you buy a DAC, a preamp, analog interconnects and a regular class D or other amp.........
Recommendations for a vacum tube tester In 1950 they were $25 My tester was $159 in 1959…. Cheap ones ('emissions' testers) did but a decent (transconductance) tester could cost about $800 back then. That's about $10K in today's dollars- a significant but essential investment for ...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often Live music needs efficient speakers to reach suitable SPL levels but for smaller spaces speaker designers can flatten the curve but the impedance does go down. @jeffrey75 If the amplifier is behaving as a voltage source and the speaker is desig...
New Class D amplifiers its a compeltely different concept but the functionality of both is the same. @orchardaudio If you ask me your amp has the greater functionality...
Stereo or monoblocks Especially if you have speakers of less than 8 Ohms, speaker cables can be critical- monoblocks allow the speaker cables to be shorter, thus reducing the artifact they might impose. If the monoblocks have balanced inputs, this can allow the interc...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often That a speaker is difficult to drive just means you need to get gear capable of driving it. I think the great majority of people who own such speakers have got suitable power for them. Of course that is very true. But like I mentioned earlier,...
Tube amps - what 3 things… The designer/builder of our custom amps told me that fixed bias provides more "snot" than cathode bias. He meant power by snot. I know you’ve stated in this thread that there is no power difference between these two biasing configurations. Can yo...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often Yes, the 705s are not that hard to drive. But whether the speakers were sensitive or not was not the issue. Did I like the sound? I know two people who have Maggie's and 400 watts in each monoblock to drive them. They love them. I see no reason ...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often @brev I get that this was your experience which I don't argue. But the sensitivity of the speaker does matter. FWIW, if you have the standmount version of the 702, its a pretty easy speaker to drive despite being a little less sensitive.
Tube amps - what 3 things… I know that cathode bias is still cathode bias with any cathode capacitor value. But the cathode to ground impedance is realy very different. On 20 Hz with standard 100uF the impedance is Z=80 Ohm, 10000uf Z=0.8 Ohm, 100000uF Z=0.08Ohms. @alexb...
Tube amps - what 3 things… Cathode bias is not a good thing in input and driver stages, not just in the output stage. I tried one solution in my DIY SET 300B amp. There is 6sn7 input tube and 6F6G in triode mode driver tube with coupling capacitors between stages. The sol...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often @ricred1 My room is L-shaped...front wall is 20’ wide, length is 26’, rear wall is 26’ wide, and 9’ ceiling. My room is rather "neutral", not too lively and not dark. With those speakers in a room of that size I would expect you'll need about...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often Please suggest a couple of integrated amplifiers that can drive MBL 101e speakers. My experience is limited to the mbl 101e. It was rated at about 81 dB which you would think is crazy inefficient. Its also a 4 Ohm load, climbing to 8 Ohms in th...
We should reject hard-to-drive speakers more often Interesting...I’m considering MBL 101E speakers, but I’m hesitant due to them being hard to try. @ricred1 MBLs are easier to drive than they might appear. That is because they are omnidirectional and when measured, the microphone is placed 1 me...
What speakers work with low wattage class A amps Maybe I should turn the question on its head and ask: What class A amp that is between 5K and 10K or so can drive speakers like the Celestion 700se. or Harbeth 30.2. Why do you want a class A amplifier? There are class D amps available now that... |
