Don't sell your tube amps
It seems as though I've heard this statement before.... 😉 Yes- I'm sure you have. I have too. What's been keeping tubes alive is how they make distortion. If you were to put the solid state amps on the bench that have been lauded for 'tubelike...

@donsachs @lynn_olson @thom_at_galibier_design  I confirmed a theory I had about OPTs over the weekend. You might give this one a try; its inexpensive. Replace the bolts that hold the OPT together. Typically these are made of steel and are insula...

Conventional wisdom is that caps etc take a while to run in so do you have to run in the whole design for a a while to get the true sense of it and then tinker with the component parts thereafter.... and then wait for them to run in again before ...
45 Lovers - what are your favorite tubes?
I use RCAs. There was a time when they were easy and cheap to find...
Looking for high power warming sounding tube amps
Whichever amp or amp class that the manufacturer or designer promotes at the time as the Holy Grail, will be the best sounding amp of all time. There is also the possibility that engineering was applied- the same sort of things that make airpla...

Tube amplifier are on borrowed time due to a different threat. Its now possible to build solid state amps that are just as smooth in the mids and highs with no glare and the same sense of musical involvement.

RM's minced no words in responding that 6SN7 tubes were a very poor choice of tubes -- "better employed in old TV's", because of their inherent high noise levels.   @whitestix I encountered that with him as well- although by that time he was be...

Ralph has written in the past that the 6SN7 is a sufficient driver tube “dependent “ on its implementation in a given circuit. I have been told that the 6EM7 provides much more current, power and drive capability compared with the 6SN7. I will s...

@smodtactical  But what actual amp has those characteristics ? Our class D does. I think the AGD Audion does too.
You've run some pretty fancy MC's, but the _______ MM cartridge really impressed me
I was hoping there’d be some explanation of the preamplification being used, since ceramic cartridge output V is dependent upon stylus displacement not velocity. So ceramics don’t need RIAA filtering in the phono stage. @lewm  If you look at t...

And, which amp would that be? An amplifier that has the same distortion profile as a tube amp of course. In case this is mysterious to anyone, the ’sonic signature’ of any amplifier is the distortion it makes. Tube amps sound the way they do ...

Id love something like that although im skeptical an SS amp can bring the tube magic the way real tubes can. I know of at least one such amp.

@smodtactical  Does the amp have to be tubes if it has the same good character as a good tube amplifier?
Ground Control to Major Tom...
Something very odd to add, the coaxial cable from my CD transport to my integrated amplifier (input 1) produces noise through the stage. @larseand Which 'stage'? the phono section??
Mystery Of Red Plating
Wish I could find a tech like that in Australia  Maybe I should ask the guitar shops… @johnread57 Guitar amps can red plate too and some of them use KT88s with some rather high voltages. Any tech that can fix them should be able to fix any ot...
