VTA and SRA?
^^ No. Assuming the LP is flat, absolutely vertical is 90 degrees. Because the cutterhead that made the LP has to be angled slightly, the playback stylus is too. This is generally about 2 degrees, but must be considered an approximation, as it is ...
Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
I suppose the standards that are applied do correlate to some extent with human hearing rules. It would be hard to see how products could be sold if not. What I am saying here in the last few posts is that for the most part, the measurement standar...
Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
if I hear something that sounds good but does not measure well ( to some reasonable reference standard that it probably should) a little question mark will likely go off in my head asking "why".Now you know why, the technical specs don't jive with...
Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
Few things are ever "universally" realized.Does not make sense to me that such things would be ignored by the experts whose products can benefit. Its all about the dollar. People often purchase audio gear with their eyes rather than their ears. The...

paired with amazing high-efficiency woofers of unknown origin that can actually keep up.Duke, as I understand it John (of Classic Audio Loudspeakers) builds those woofers himself, even winding the voice coils and field coils.
Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
Assuming the noise floor is low and can't be heard anyhow, what is there to hear below it?Al's comments above are the correct answer to this. Chaos Theory points to the 'why' of it- the amplifier with feedback is operating in a chaotic fashion whe...
Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
So hearing hiss is better than not hearing harmonics that can't be heard? I must be missing something?Correct- you are missing something. The hiss which is the noise floor of a zero feedback circuit is at a low level, just as the noise floor of an...
Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
Al and Learsfool wanted to know more about the low level detail thing. Here it is.This has to do with the rules of human hearing/perception. Apparently we have the ability to hear into a noise floor and perceive detail which is interesting as norm...

Mapman, I've heard Duke's speakers in some pretty small rooms and they have worked great! I've also heard them in some larger rooms with excellent results.
Calling all Horn lovers
Larryi, just a FWIW, Classic Audio found that there was an error in the throat design of the TAD horn, which is why the TAD horns tend to sound a little edgier and why the Classic Audio horn, which looks nearly identical, is nice and smooth.
Tubes vs Solid State - Imaging, Soundstaging, 3D
I'm late to this thread, but: my perception has been that the prevailing viewpoint among experienced audiophiles is that a particular strong point of tube amplification tends to be imaging and dimensionality. And that has certainly been my experie...
Reverse Phase Preamp with HT Bypass
Phase makes a difference if the recording uses a minimal mic recording technique- either 2 or 3 mics (if the third mic is a center channel). If more than that are used, valuable phasing information becomes jumbled and the effects of absolute phase ...

Kiddman, I agree that if there is a problem in the design you will have anomalies, just like you do with any other speaker. If the horn design is correct however, it can be one of the lowest distortion loudspeaker applications out there. So with th...
Tube Amps and Friendly Speakers - Back Impedance
Bruce, I have set up systems plenty of times where we did something like that. For example we had a set Sound Lab Dynastats about 20 years ago where the amps played the woofer just fine, but were rolled off on the ESL panel. So we installed an auto...
Stylus Rake Angle
I'm still wondering why, if slant angle varies not only from record to record but by the signal itself, by a cutter who's VTA is for all intents and purposes static, does cartridge VTA/SRA need to match VMA?The SRA of the cutterhead does not vary ...
