What's the best EL34 amp besides 8b? The ST-70 is a good amp, but at full power the 5AR4 rectifier is under stress. They should have designed it for a pair of them. There is an excellent thread on the ST-70 design over on Audiokarma.
Tube question - need new ones Andy at Vintage Tube Services is also a good place to look for tubes and its very likely that he knows the CJ already. Our customers have been very happy with his work.
Audio Research preamp ratings & sound differences I'm with Marty on this one.
Quality system, make poor recordings sound better? A great recording with have dimension (width and depth) and won't be harsh. There will be detail and subtlety. There will be dynamic contrasts too. The bass won't be rolled off, nor will it be too boomy. In a way, its the kind of thing that when y...
where to go from here..,, Some tube preamps won't like that, for example ARC. But some tube preamps are fine with that. So you do have to look into it when you look at preamps.
What's the best EL34 amp besides 8b? Yes, the H/K Citation 2 is an impressive amp- my favorite from the classic era.
Phono Preamp and Cartridge selection Hello Doug, it is indeed true and I am not the only one to say so by any means. Talk to Stig at Lyra and he will tell you the same thing and has posted to that effect on this forum. You are correct that a low impedance is what is needed to detune ...

Tube preamp for Pass Labs x150.5 Amp FWIW the 6SN7 is a better sounding tube than the 6H30 or similar tubes like the 6DJ8/6922. Frame grid triodes as these are not designed for audio and so while being very linear are also microphonic- and its hard to find one that is not.The 6SN7 wa...
The Plasmatron - more linear output voltage Krell is still hanging on to that idea that tube preamps produce DC at their outputs, which is absurd. Not impressed.
Recommendation on MC cartidge and Phono Preamp For the kind of money you are budgeting, I would consider a moving magnet cartridge, although there are some MC cartridges available for under $1000 that are quite nice. You can see though that this does not leave you with much of a budget for a p...
Phono Preamp and Cartridge selection Further, with LOMCs you need to get into impedance matching. Unlike MMs and HOMCs, which are all designed to play into 47kOhms, every LOMC cartridge performs best with a different impedance at the phono inputs. The optimal impedance for any given ...
Help picking a tube preamp, please David, if you have a Ref 75 you must use a preamp that is balanced. The Ref 75 cannot accept a single-ended preamp, unless you use a line transformer to convert from single-ended to balanced.
Why do designers/manufacturers...? We use an IEC connector for the simple reason that no matter what cord we put on the amp, the likelihood is high that it will be discarded anyway in favor of the audiophile's preference. We do however make sure we have the best resistors and capac...
Quality system, make poor recordings sound better? Phd, FWIW, I have horns too and no worries on the top end. However, I can't listen to passive volume controls in my system- they come off too bright and no bass relative to my preamp. Also, generally speaking horn speakers don't play well with tran... |
