Using tube amp with electrostatic speakers.
Ralph, I’d still like to get your opinion on McIntosh amps with autoformers. Just in general, do you think they are a good sounding amp compared with other amps in their price ranges? Do they implement their autoformers well? Would they be a go...
Input/Output line level transformers for digital glare
I still notice all the outboard Dac's, good ones, I think still have output transformers vs other methodsi also see the transformer guys;  lyndall & Jensen advertise the output transformers as smoothing of digitis? Some do some don't.A good tra...
Do all tube preamps leak DC?
Almost all preamps and amps have a tiny bit of DC offset. Maybe 5 mV or less for a pre, 60mV or less for an amp. A preamp with 5 mV of DC at its output is rare. Our preamps have direct-coupled outputs and they have less DC Offset than that! With **...
Using tube amp with electrostatic speakers.
^^ to further build on that, many transistor amps can't continue to increase power into low impedance loads like 0.5 ohms. Further, the speaker cable itself becomes a significant factor when dealing with impedances like this!!This works in ML's fa...
Input/Output line level transformers for digital glare
@sbank  The reason a transformer might help if it has limited bandwidth, would be to filter out digital noise. I've seen at least one DAC that sounded pretty good in its day that incorporated the inductance of the transformer as part of the smooth...
Best amps to use for the Dali megalines
Dali has been pretty specific about using the same amp on the bottom as you have on top.
Using tube amp with electrostatic speakers.
One last thing, most ESL's are really not very neutral. Almost all can benefit significantly from digital EQ from the midrange on up. I find that ESLs can be quite neutral! You are correct though that if there is a problem on the amplifier side, ...
Using tube amp with electrostatic speakers.
Are you PAYED BY THEM?Most all tube amps use output transformers with impedance taps that work just fine into 4 or 6 or even 16 ohms! The Zero is of NO VALUE to most tube amps!No- I have no financial relationship with Paul Speltz or his company. H...
Linn Klout - Playing Loud With Low Impedance Speakers
This speaker is low sensitivity; if you really want to play louder I recommend replacing the speaker as in the average room you will want 400-600 watts if you really want to make things move. If your amplifier seemed like it did the job before, ta...
Using tube amp with electrostatic speakers.
If you plan to use Martin Logans with a tube amplifier, you will want to investigate getting a set of ZEROs (www.zeroimpedance.com).These will help that tube amp play the speakers without high end rolloff.
Input/Output line level transformers for digital glare
That can work a bit if the transformers have limited bandwidth. But part of the problem is that digital glare is caused by a certain type of distortion called 'inharmonic distortion' which usually does not show up in the specs on a lot of digital g...
Do equipment stands have an impact on electronics?
That's great feedback Ralph and describes precisely what I have experienced.  Since you are an engineer and manufacturer like Geoff, any thoughts on why SS devices would be vulnerable? The semiconductors themselves are microphonic. I've seen some...
A80 (RC MkII) or A810 - which one should I buy? - ANY INPUT IS WELCOME !!
If you can find an Ampex 351-2 it will be a better sounding machine (if properly refurbished), but they are a lot more clunky in terms of transport operation!
Power conditioner help
The best power conditioners were not offered to high end audio. They were made by Elgar (still in business). They used a massive isolation transformer which had a feedback winding on it. A low distortion oscillator was used, synced to the AC line f...
SET 45 Amp Driving Dynamic Speakers
My 8watts 300B SET plays on not even horn and not even efficient speakers (marvelous 88dB XTZ Master M2 speakers to hear or have), and yet sounds loud enough. Imagine now with efficient speakers!!! 'Sounds loud enough' is exactly the right term ...
