Help me rebirth my old turntable I realize that trying to compare my analog equipment to my digital equipment is totally unfair. No- it isn’t. Typically LPs have more bandwidth than digital- going up to 35KHz is no problem for most cartridges and the LP mastering machines go up w...
Who makes this Pre-amp? Tube rectified won't do you any good if the preamp has regulated power supplies. IMO/IME regulation in a preamp is far more important! We've been using 6SN7s for well over 20 years. Nice tube.
The Audio Gods are tough but fair-Have you had the "Curse of the 300B" ? If only we could have 200 watt 300b SETs...why oh why not!?Its the output transformer- with SETs its very difficult to get bandwidth as power is increased. This is true of push-pull too, but you don't run into problems until you have about an orde...
Amplifier current vrs watts; why is current more important? But a monoblock amp like the "Legendary" old Mark Levinson ML2 monoblocks that are only 25w!! into 8ohms, will sound better into them, because it’s said they double their wattage for each halving of impedance all the way down to 1ohm with the c...
Is it common for tubes to outweigh the cost of the amp or preamp? I don't know how a tube headphone amplifier can be made for only $599.00... so with a cost that low, it stands to reason that some nice NOS tubes might well be more expensive. Normally not the case though.
Supratek or Don Sachs - which way to go? atmasphere will you please stop posting pix of preamps from many years ago, the wiring of modern Suprateks is completely different.@mickm@celander is correct. I've not posted any photos nor have I posted a link to any. Rather than accuse me of so...
Amplifier current vrs watts; why is current more important? As someone who imports and sells a line focused on current vs. wattage, I have a POV. Art Audio amps are biased toward current. That is, our amps are high current and deliver lower wattage vs. many of our competitors. This means that with any g...
Reel to reel That piece of s... Technics with Grado is nothing really, DJ toy at best.@inna Yes- precisely the point. When mastering an LP you can't do it so that only the very best pickups will do the job. The groove you cut must be easily played on an averag...
Reel to reel I am afraid that I just cannot agree with a blanket statement like that.@uberwaltzYes, its all about provenance. @benjie The 3rd harmonic in tape machines has to do with the nature of the record and playback heads, both being inductive devices. If...
Reel to reel Ralph, I don't fully trust your hearing and your neutrality and objectivity. Tape is overall superior to any LP pressing in real world. As for theoretical possibilities, I don't know, but there is always an issue of playback. Put $200k vinyl se...
Zu Druid 6 @jsautter The Druids would be a good combo with the M-60s!
Amplifier current vrs watts; why is current more important? 'High current' is a marketing thing. As others have pointed out, you don't need that much current to drive high power into low impedances. If you are looking closely and doing the math, it becomes apparent that the current 'rating' of many solid st...
Supratek or Don Sachs - which way to go? Ralph: And the absence of a wiring photo should implicate an audio designer as not having pride in his construction quality? No! - just a missed opportunity IMO.
Supratek or Don Sachs - which way to go? And yes, point-to-point soldering results is “messier” wiring presentations than the corresponding PCB soldered wiring. If one wants aesthetics of what’s presented under the hood but never seen, then buy an all-PCB component. It does not matter... |
