Which 300b amplifier for Devore O/96 @essrand The O/96 is a great speaker; 2dB less efficient than my Classic Audio Loudspeakers. This is just my experience, but the power of a single 300b is simply insufficient on *my* speakers. Unless you're in a small room or never listen with vo...
Speakers under $50k that rival $200k+ speakers? Classic Audio Loudspeakers makes a couple of models that easily deserve this sort of comment: I've not heard any speaker more expensive that actually sounded better. The CARs also have the benefit of being easy to drive- 16 ohms and 98dB 1 watt/1 m...
Integrated with passive preamp section. Good or bad idea, or both ? If a passive control is built into a power amplifier or integrated amplifier, that's the best place it can be! By doing so, the designer is able to bypass most of the problems that make external passive controls problematic. An early example of th...
I'm having a really hard time with: "Power cable reduced my soundstage"... The wire isn’t ideal, the power source isn’t ideal, the filter caps aren’t ideal. The process of rectification, generates a series of high-current spikes which are made up of a large number of harmonics, in turn generating voltage disturbances ...
Is there an affordable long run XLR preamp to amp cable out there? I don't understand the concern about pin 2 or pin 3 hot when it comes to cables. In either case, pin 1 is signal ground, and if a cable is wired straight-through (pin 2 to 2 and 3 to 3), it will work fine with either system.Pin 1 is not suppose...
Need a preamp? Ralph, any downside to source switching with CMOS electronic switches instead of relays? Yes- there is a reason we still use mechanical switches. CMOS is pretty good- but have a higher resistance and more diode effect than actual switches.I didn't...
Tube Amps Watts vs SS amp The tubes vs SS discussion should focus more on the type of music one prefers rather than the technical merits of each amp. I have multiple tube and SS amps that I interchange frequently. If you primarily listen to Jazz, voice, acoustic music o...
Need a preamp? So I got the Schiit sys but it seemed to have muted the top end. Didn't sound as lively even with the volume turned all the way up.This is also a common complaint of passive controls. I'll be interested to hear what you think of the switchbox.
BSR Turntable If trying to refurbish old rubber parts, brake fluid is what you soak it in, not water. Give it about 2 weeks. If the belt is cracked this won't help it of course...
Need a preamp? Then they are kidding themselvesActually they aren't. Loss of impact is the most common complaint aimed at passive controls (the exception being when the control is already in the power amplifier). Loss of impact is a coloration. The problem is th...
Anyone Here Have Atma-Sphere Amps? Atmasphere, The lower the impedance the less efficient a speaker becomes. Transformerless SS amps respond to this by putting out more power and as long as their output sections can handle it and the power supplies can dish it out everyone is ha...
Recommendation for higher power tube amp If the amp that drives the Theil no longer has to make power for the bass, there will be more power for everything else.IME this is a really tricky way to go since active electronic crossover (which is what you need to see to it that your amp for ...
Tube Amps Watts vs SS amp My understanding is that the concept of “bandwidth” is very important. Perhaps more important for tube amps than solid state. But I have a First Watt SIT-3 which is a low watt solid state amp. It apparently has some bandwidth to it because it driv...
Anyone Here Have Atma-Sphere Amps? @joeinid Horns aren't a problem including AvantGardes- a review is on our S-30 page. We have an adapter we use to reduce the gain of the amplifier for use with really high efficiency loudspeakers (it replaces at tube in the voltage amplifier). It ...
Considering switching to Tubes B&W's don't have the reputation for being all that tube friendly. While this is true, the 805s are an exception. We've had a number of customers using 805s with our M-60 amplifiers so its a friendly load for almost any tube amp. |
