Tubed Monos for Focal Aria 948s
@zyphryx  A transformer-coupled tube amp without a four ohm tap??No worries- a set of ZEROs (www.zeroimpedance.com) can fix that. If the speaker is bi-wirable you can try putting the ZEROs just on the woofer section.
Are tubes really “warm”?
I always thought the warm sound associated with tubes came from distortion and HF roll off. The 2nd and 3rd harmonics are responsible for 'warmth', but tubes can have plenty of bandwidth- the old Harmon Kardon Citation 2 had bandwidth to 100KHz an...
Rupert Neve's RNHP & beyerdynamic Amiron (not great)
Neve made some highly regarded mixer consoles over the last few decades, but that does not mean the circuit couldn't be better- nothing is perfect in this world, which also means that something else can be better, and that price or reputation migh...
Determining the Source of Noise when TT is On
When I disconnect the left cable from the back of the phono pre-amp the noise stops. If this is the case, swap this cable with the one for the right channel. Does the problem move? If yes, the electronics are off the hook- and investigating the cab...
Matching fully balanced with unbalanced.
Sure. But its likely that the amp, even though equipped with an XLR connection, isn't actually processing the signal fully. If the equipment supports the balanced standard (and in high end audio most of it does not) you will run into a buzz proble...
6SN7GTB replacement
If a modern 6SN7GT like the Chinese Shuguang, yes, you can as even though they are marked as GTs, they are spec'ed more like GTBs and we've been using them that way for over 20 years with no worries. Don't do that with any of the boutique Chinese ...
Preamplifier with a class AB power amplifier
So- does the amp or the preamp need this gain stage? It can be used in both. This circuit was used a lot in many early 1970s solid state power amps as the input voltage amplifier. Obviously this circuit does not need or use a bipolar power supply....
Are integrated amps technically better than separates?
Agree with “erniesch", his statement is 100% correct: "Never mind that just inside the wall is the cheapest copper lines the contractor could buy.” Last two feet power cable 10 or 18 AWG difference is drop in the ocean, if power lines inside ho...
Are integrated amps technically better than separates?
But pream has to have output stage that drives interconnect and relatively low impedance (compared to tube input inside amp) of power amplifier input. The interstage driver in integrated amplifier is much easy to design and doesn’t have to have...
Are integrated amps technically better than separates?
It’s so interesting that folks think they need a high quality power chord and expensive interconnects. Never mind that just inside the wall is the cheapest copper lines the contractor could buy. If you are suggesting that a power cord does not o...
Unsure how to set levels to use tubes and power amp together
Volume pot on pre does not have detents (would/could changing the volume pot to one with detents, give better control?)...No. You have more control when its continuously variable. I'd back off on the amp volume controls, maybe to 3 o'clock, and se...
best preamp ever - cost is no object
At least this way is more fun - but really nobody is gaining any insight from these kinds of questions & responses. I seem to recall posting on this thread earlier, but if I didn’t: defining what is meant by ’best’ is a good place to start. Th...
Are integrated amps technically better than separates?
Each amplification stage, capacitor and cable add distortions and noise. All those gain stages are in an integrated amp too. Usually though you have a greater chance of lower noise with separates since crosstalk and intermodulations from the other...
THD vs. S/N+D
The various harmonics are perceived by the ear in different ways. So THD doesn't tell the whole story, and often amps with low THD might not sound as good as an amp with higher THD. Here's some of why:The ear does two things with harmonics. One is...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
But I can't hear the sleeve bearings on my little Premotec either - not until it is connected to the platter by a belt, and then only through the playback amplification. So I think that sleeve bearings are a problem anywhere in the chain, and t...
