Tube amp - tube socket problem
You don't need a new socket. You have three options.1) remove the tube and ever so slightly bend its pins inward so it grips the socket more tightly.2) Remove the tube. Using a tiny screwdriver, work the bit in between the socket contact and the s...
What could cause this amp to fail?
If the amp is able to play, even for a brief moment, its unlikely that the power devices are damaged- if that were the case it would not play at all.Power supply filter caps OTOH are the sort of thing that are likely failing with something this ol...
Direct Drive vs. Idler Drive vs. Belt drive
I think HP of all people nailed it when he noted that digital reproduction effects a high pass filter albeit at a very low frequency which seems to rob the music of its natural ambiance. The bass drops off a cliff, metaphorically speaking. You ...
More Power or use subwoofer to boost bass for music
I would disagree with the suggestion to moving the speakers closer to the wall.If you run subs moving them closer to the wall is very practical!
Removing a ZERO from the price of amps
I think that's true or should be. We've been working on a class D amp of our own for the last three years. We don't expect it to be particularly pricey- so far its looking like it might be the least expensive amp we make.
Is VTA and SRA the same thing?
if we can set the top of the cartridge perfectly parallel to the platter, then we can get very close to 92 degree? If all is well, probably so. But I've seen cartridges where the stylus was incorrectly mounted, making the proper SRA impossible. It ...
Matching fully balanced with unbalanced.
.i just try to understand if it beneficial to go balanced as far as I can in the system chain if I have unbalanced amp at the end anyway. The answer to this bit is 'yes.'
SET the best?
I learned the lesson of speaker efficiency a long time ago. When I hear systems that have low efficiency speakers and a high power amp, they sound 'little' compared to what I'm used to...
Is VTA and SRA the same thing?
One thing to keep in mind- the SRA at 92 degrees is an average. In reality the mastering engineer didn’t set the cutter stylus that way. He set it up so it would cut a silent groove. The cutter stylus only goes about 10 hours, then you have to rem...
Matching fully balanced with unbalanced.
BTW, that opamp chops a full audio sign-wave into a negative and a positive, Huh?? No it doesn't. An opamp has two inputs, inverted and non-inverted, and otherwise is a DC coupled amp with very high gain. for audio purposes, to control the gain a...
Are tubes really “warm”?
Tubes and analog seem to be more ambient. This is euphoric and not necessarily accurate, a very old argument. This is all about that first watt, where low level detail resides. Its not about euphonic character, just more accurate- and since there ...
What does a tonearm contribute to the sound of a turntable?
What's old is new again?
SET the best?
I think a low sensitive speakers fashion is a huge delusion of Hi-End market .I totally agree! This drives my 99db Heresy IIIs to as loud as I need to hear 'em with plenty of headroom left. Its this phenomena of *sounding* loud that's what I'm t...
Thoughts about buying a Bedini 100
Bedini amps are solid state. But they are pretty nice sounding as solid state goes. I recommend you get the filter capacitors in the power supply replaced before pressing them into service!
Why don’t tube amps sound like tubes anymore?
I have heard sometime ago that the reason older tube amps sound so tubey is due to higher levels of distortion when compared to newer designs. This is partially true. Its the 2nd and 3rd harmonics that are in question- together with a lack of hig...
