Using step up / down transformers?
Not too much oversized though. 30% more VA than you need is a good amount. This statement isn't quite correct. AC power transformers will generate distortion, particularly if loaded past about 50%. So to prevent the transformer from distorting th...

From the Wilson website page for the Alexia 2:Measurements Sensitivity 89 dB @ 1 watt @ 1 meter @ 1 kHz Nominal Impedance 4 ohms / minimum 2.54 ohms @ 85 Hz Minimum Amplifier Power 20 watts per channel Frequency Response 19 Hz – 32 kHz +/- 3 dB Ro...
Best sub for music,
How important is the amplifier in a system of subs? Almost any solid state amp made in the last 30-40 years has enough feedback to play the bass right (that's why solid state has always been known for good bass - good mids and highs? -that's anoth...
Low-sensitivity speakers — What's special about them?
Judging by this thread I'd say low sensitivity speakers have the advantage of not having an hysterical cult following that refuses to accept that what is most important to them isn't necessarily what is most important to everyone.  A bit of inn...
Best sub for music,
There is many that say 2 subs is the best way to go. Can someone explain this philosophy a bit more (simple terms preferred)? Yes. If the subs are asked to go above about 80Hz they will begin to attract attention to themselves. At this point you'...
Is D for Dry? Class D...
George goes on about this EPDR thing. But he's not clear on what the impact will be on a class D amplifier other than saying that they won't drive it.Almost any class D amp made today has an output impedance that is often a good order of magnitude...
SET vs Push-Pull (Line Magnetic vs Primaluna)
I find theorising about about amp-speaker pairings to be a fairly futile excercise. Science can often give you a good idea of what to expect but there's a lot to be said for the empirical method. In the case of the OP, the room is the big variable...

@dsper Tonearm cable is Cardas Double Litz 1 X 21.5 coax that is supposed to be 33 pF per foot.OK- so 3 feet of that is 100pf. If the cartridge spec is for 150pf the phono section should be set to 50pf.
Horn speakers , high efficiency but not “shouty”
@jjss49 I've found that you have to be careful with the amp that you use on a horn. It must have a clean first watt! If it has distortion issues like higher ordered harmonic generation (a problem with many solid state amps) you can certainly wind ...
Best sub for music,
I’ll probably get promptly booted out of here and banned for life for suggesting 18" JBL drivers on an audiophile forumNah. 18s are cool. The bigger cone needs less excursion. Very nice for extension in the bass. The only real issue is the size of...
Life After Technics SL1200 Mk5
@dsper I think you are doing well. You might try dialing in even less capacitance, since the tonearm cable is part of the overall capacitance that is a load on the cartridge. If its an actual tonearm cable and not a generic audio cable then it mig...

Better bass/foundation, better drive, and the treble is much better. It is a little bit shrill on a couple of albums but I suspect that it needs more time to break in or it could just be the albums.@dsper  Good- glad to hear it!Since this is a h...
Atma-Sphere MA-1 tube rolling
ralph, any theories or thoughts as to why this is the case?We suspect that the environmental control is poor- tubes are made by hand and we've heard that they don't use Latex gloves in their assembly. That comes from Eric Barbour back when he was ...
LYRA DELOS CARTRIDGE TOO BRIGHT, THIN AND SHRILL SOUNDING
atmosphere, I had an Electron Kinetics Eagle 2 on the bottom of the 4a's. Your amps while sonic champions in the midrange, suck in the bass department. I've had the Eagle in my own system at home. I can see why people liked it at the time- as so...
Buying used: how old is too old?
Breakups and suspension are the two major issues with older speakers. Suspensions, especially foam surrounds, perish. So the drivers (in particular the woofers) might need at the very least a new surround installed.Breakups are inherent in the dri...
