Used tube preamps, Cary, AR, Aesthetix, Wells...........or? Don't Capacitors deteriorate over time and negatively impact sound quality? So buying used sometimes may not be a great idea @emergingsoul The capacitors in question are usually electrolytics. If we are talking about a tube preamp, those capaci...
Balanced vs RCA preamps The resulting voltage is the so-called differential voltage, which is twice the amount of the individual phase voltage. This explains why the voltage from an XLR port is twice that of its RCA counterpart. @lanx0003 Actually this isn’t true if t...
I should start with speakers. This I know. I’d like to establish a new system. I should start with speakers. This I know. @toontrader I’m not sure this is actually the best approach. But here are some tips. The first thing you need to sort out is your budget, since if the speaker is inefficient you’ll need a lot of power a...
Balanced vs RCA preamps Where did you get this from? Have you done your homework before taking 10 seconds to write this? Let me do some homework for you, and you can do the rest to see if you can find anything to support your false statement. DAC XLR RCA...
Balanced vs RCA preamps To the OP, Balanced Audio Technology (BAT) makes several tubed preamps. Most of their models are solely balanced. Heck, "Balanced" is even in their brand name. @mammothguy54 You might be interested to know that one of the founders of BAT, Steve...
Balanced vs RCA preamps @emergingsoul I like it I have one of our MP-1 preamps driving about 35 feet of balanced cable which connects to the amplifiers. The tonearm has a balanced connection to the preamp as does the DAC. My tuner is old school so its a single ended con...
Dumb question......why do you need a preamp? You only need a preamp if you wish to add "color" to your sound. Otherwise, if you do not have these: a volume control and/or selectable input device will be enough. @patl In my experience I’ve had less coloration (and more impact) when an acti...
Balanced vs RCA preamps First of all, they do not exist for tube equipment, maybe there is a hybrid out there I am not aware of, but for all practical purposes anything with XLR connections is going to be solid state. @billstevenson This statement is false. You might ...
Turntable Mats for Technics Grand Class, "G" Series So I was just curious why you stipulate that the mat needs to be glued to the platter. @lewm That is specifically in the case of the Oracle mat which is designed to be used in that manner. I have a mat at home that is the same kind that SOTA ...
Turntable Mats for Technics Grand Class, "G" Series Why does the mat have to be glued to the platter? Seems to me you’re better off with nothing between mat and platter, for best energy transfer. @lewm It depends on the platter pad to some extent. But the pad, if its doing its job properly, is dam...
Choosing between 2 preamps @honeybadgertube Of NOS 12AU7s the Amperex "Bugle Boy" 7316 has gotten the highest marks in customer feedback. A good alternate is the Bugle Boy 12AU7. In new tubes we've had good comments about the Gold Lion 12AU7. No matter what tubes you get ...
Do military/industrial tubes sound better than regular ones ? Ralph, I see. This makes it complicated, doesn’t it ? You just have to try, no general answer really. @inna Exactly.
Dumb question......why do you need a preamp? @troutbum If you have an integrated amp you may not need a preamp. But a preamp can be very useful if you have monoblock amplifiers. The reason is simple: the longer the speaker cable, the less resolution and impact you'll have out of the speaker...

Turntable Mats for Technics Grand Class, "G" Series @stereo5 @pryso There are three screws that affix the platter to the motor. If you apply the mat with them in place you'd have to do surgery should you ever want to remove the platter for shipping. So those screws would have to be removed first. |
