How important is the efficiency of a speaker to you?
You’re referring to a boutique element of high efficiency drivers that aren’t representative of this segment. Low eff. drivers have their expensive iterations as well, and when you count in the typically larger size of high eff. drivers, bigger v...

Pin 1 is shield and grounded to chassis, pin 2 is XLR + phase and pin 3 is XLR - phase.  It will drive any power amp with XLR connections, and will happily drive a 10K amp input impedance. @donsachs How do you deal with the variable loads which...
How important is the efficiency of a speaker to you?
@lonemountain You are inferring something I did not say with this statement:    The idea that lower efficiency is always done as a cost saving excercise is clearly not true.    I don't need to repeat myself here. But it may interest you to kno...
Preamp power supply capacitor upgrade
@yowser Your goal here is, I assume, to improve performance. To that end, by bypassing the power supply, what you want is uniform output impedance of the power supply at all frequencies. So the correct dielectric may not be the one that is also ...
How important is the efficiency of a speaker to you?
Dependency and "seems to be" - as a technical observation I don't see how it holds an absolute correlation with regard the sonic outcome of SS amps in each and every case and high efficiency speaker combination, and to which degree? @phusis Ris...
How important is the efficiency of a speaker to you?
That the idea that dynamic range is improved or noise floor is changed due to speaker efficiency alone is simply not true?   @lonemountain  In a word, No. The physics of how voice coils work is the problem. While there may be examples that s...
How important is the efficiency of a speaker to you?
Nothing sterile, tonally lean, mechanical or bright sounding about the Brit, I can tell you that, or whatever you’re implying about high power amps sonics. @phusis The issue is that most amps made using feedback, which includes high power solid...
Preamp power supply capacitor upgrade
@yowser I've worked with the V-Caps a lot. The Copper foil series is audibly superior (and measure better as well). Given how you're going about this the cost differential seems irrelevant.  I do feel compelled to point out however that as couplin...
How important is the efficiency of a speaker to you?
Example: even its inherent importance of speaker impedance phase no one name it and this is something to take care when we are choosing an amp @rauliruegas Actually this has been brought up in this thread.
Brand New Vinyl Static and Pops
It sounds like this is a combination of two things- a cartridge problem and perhaps also setup. The cartridge could have been dropped and the magnet knocked out of alignment. This can cause all kinds of weird stuff while the cartridge looks fine....
Excellent Solid State or Hybrid Monoblocks Recommendations
I’m wondering how they would do driving difficult loads like the big Wilson’s.  @carey1110 That depends on the class D amp, like it would if it was a class A amp. Some will do great. IME the Wilsons have a low impedance but otherwise are not ha...
How important is the efficiency of a speaker to you?
If a speaker requires an amp/ arc welder up front to drive it, then IMO, there is a problem with the speaker design. YMMV. Exactly! Such speakers border on criminal as there simply aren't amps that sound like music that can drive them nor would...
How important is the efficiency of a speaker to you?
I suggest since you are such a big fan of the Parasound JC1+'s sound that you go out and immediately buy a pair, if you haven't already...That's what I am talking about...;0) @daveyf :) Distortion vs frequency is a better measure of how music...
How important is the efficiency of a speaker to you?
The physics of the speaker is a balancing act: if you want more efficiency you give up other advantages. Im not saying this is wrong, it’s simply a choice. A moderate efficiency speaker (86dB 1w/1m) is not a mistake either as it is just a differe...
Brand New Vinyl Static and Pops
@jjbeason14 I think we need to know what 'flubbing' means in this case. One thing that can cause ticks and pops is the input of the phono section overloading at ultrasonic frequencies. This is actually pretty common and is caused by the inductanc...
