Yamaha m4


I have a yamaha m4 I took the cover off to clean it and when it is on I moved the      2 big  caps when i moved  them        back and four they made poping sound . If dont move them its  fine..is that ok?  thank you.

Doesn’t sound great, does it? Either the caps' connections are intermittent internally or the solder joints to the board are dried out.

Why were you cleaning the inside of your amp with the power on?  That is a recipe for disaster. 

He didn’t say the amp was on nor whether the popping sound was from the amp itself or from the speakers. I’m getting that it was from the amp and indicates deteriorating solder joints at the pcb. Whether the caps are good or not needs to be evaluated by a professional. The M4 was sold around 1980. I put a few out into the world back then. Nice piece. 

Sorry.  Reading again the story seems to be the same…bad solder or bad caps. 

I would assume that "flexing" a sizable circuit board on a powered up 40+ year old amp would create such noises.

Hopefully no serious damage was done, but doing so was certainly not an upgrade.
