??? Which Would You Buy ???

So your in the market for a new component, amp, speakers,DAC,doesn't matter what it is...You have a budget of say $7500.00...You aren't made of $ & this amount represents a significant investment in time spent working & saving & will likely be the only upgrade you can make for the next several years...The rest of your system is good, what is considered mid level gear..
After extensive research, time & money spent seeking out & demo'ing many choices you narrow your shortlist down to 3 different choices..2 of these choices are from well established manufacturers, have good reviews, sound very good in the demo environment & have excellent build quality but will max out your budget..
The third choice is 1/3 the price of the other 2,is a fairly new product & has limited but positive feedback on sound quality, comes from an established manufacturer that many high end manufacturers have sourced to build their products, has  very good build quality but not quite up to the level of the others & offers about 85% the sound quality of the others...
Choosing item #3 saves you about $5000.00,meaning you could also upgrade another component or bank the savings...Which do you buy???

Given your scenario- I wouldn’t buy any. I would look for another alternative as the third option suggests there still a great component available below my budget.

Buying "the best you can afford" implies that more money spent will yield a better sound. More money spent doesn't equal better sound OR quality OR longevity. This is a selling point that brand name marketing people want you to believe.

"If it costs more, it must be better" is a lie.

So I don't see why there's a discussion about amps really. Before you can really start to look at a specific component have you ruled out everything else including speakers? (If so I missed that part of the thread! Apologies!) While keeping in mind everything is relative, I for example bought a used pair of speakers that completely blow my mind every time I listen to something.

So what I'm saying is everyone really needs to have an understanding of where you're at to begin with. Then there can be discussions on what part of the system should be focused on first and then go from there.

If your speakers are say currently in the $1000 dollar value I'd be tempted to throw a good majority of that $7500 at speakers. And like I pointed out if you're willing to go used then you can find some fantastic values out there! I know I did.

I think if you've already got some components I think I'd be likely looking at my speakers first unless they are already worth $7500 or more.

Hope that helps,

E.

If you are going to upgrade, go big or you will want to upgrade again soon.  That being said, upgrading speakers makes the biggest difference in any system.

A difference is not necessarily an improvement. Each component must work well in the system. I would purchase the one which integrated the best with what I already have. Otherwise, prepare to get back on the merry-go-round.
