Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO
slipknot1
Alan Jay Lerner, Frederick Loewe / Julie Andrews, Richard Burton ‎– Camelot, Original Broadway Cast Recording
(Columbia Masterworks 1960)
Ha, Brian, I'm like a kid!
Been a busy day playing lots of stuff so I'm adding them in now.
Barbara Carroll Trio ‎– We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye (RCA Victor 1956 mono)

The detail of the tinkling piano is a revelation. You'll never hear that in digital anything.
You're welcome Brian. I love it when others are appreciative for the right reasons.
@noromance

I’m trying (all) four 12ax7’s first. They are (supposedly) ‘platinum’ matched as a set of four. Thus, I just figured that was the way to go instead of mixing the 4 12ax7’s. Are you saying you can mix within the same tube type without issue? I don’t have them yet BTW.

I may also try new 12au7’s as well, but only have a pair of those. And not certain those are as critical as the ax’s in terms of overall sound.

Got a decent price on the Genalex Gold Lions (gold pins) at about $32 per tube, or about $10 less than most all are charging. So, not a huge investment at all, more about trying something different, and they seem to have an excellant reputation for new lower cost tubes. From what I have read, they have very good performance across all frequencies. I may also try some new Tung-Sol, but figure from what I have read, that would be a much different sound. They are pretty cheap though.

I haven’t considered too strongly NOS yet, but they are intriguing. Just don’t have enough history of their various sound signatures yet. And also not ready to pay $450++ for a set of four......yet 😉
Maria McKee  - S/T
(Geffen Records 1989)

Decent music. This was the Diana Krall audiophile record of its day. I bought it. It isn't.
B. Sure you can mix makes. As it's phono, you've got to be a little careful of gain asymmetry but TBH, if it sounds better and awesome, who cares? On the pairs front: if you weren't enamored with the all 4 swap, you may be missing out on improvements with them in other positions.
B. You have got to get Telefunkens in there if you want to hear clean, transparent awesomeness. I would not do older Mullards in that amp.
@noromance

Good to know, thanks, I’ll keep that in mind.

And yes, considering Telefunken as well.

I guess tubes are like us humans. They perform better in some designs than others. I don’t think one can say one tube of the same value can perform the same in all situations.

The EAR had plenty of soul to begin with.
@noromance

Seimens tend to be like the Teles but without the soul.

Interesting. I was checking out some of Siemens.

Not sure why, but I keep thinking if I go Telefunken, I would probably get a vintage set instead of new....but yea...they are not cheap.

Just getting my feet wet so to speak.
Dear Lord. Do not get new ones. Must be originals! Hint... look for Dynaco/Fisher pulls made by Telefunken. Cheaper.
The EAR had plenty of soul to begin with.
Absolutely. I have a TdP amp and it’s brilliant (but in need of repair)
@noromance

Seen those too, but wasn’t sure how much like the old Telefunken’s they may be. Glad to have those around me with experience with tubes. This is just all new to me, but I’m truly interested now, especially because the Trumpet has increased my vinyl pleasure even further. Never seriously considered it prior.....but to be honest....I could see seeking out tubes throughout the chain....but for my current set-up, that could be a bit more challenging.

Been a pretty fast paced journey since purchasing the SOTA last year....and all well worth the $$$ thus far. Heck, two years ago I never thought I would have a turntable again.
Brian,

Thinking more about it, finding a great solution for isolation will be the best decision going forward. Once you hear the Trumpet, isolated, you'll be able to evaluate tubes in a better way.

PM me, I have a good solution for you to try.
"Junky Star"  (such a good record)

Needed a good, deep clean.

Side 3 up now.
@tomic601 and anyone interested in the tube power supply I hooked into my modified Croft 25R phono preamp. On a whim, I bought another set of Nobsound springs and put them under the power supply.  It weighs about 18 pounds. I figured it couldn't hurt, right?
This may be right up some of you guys’ alley
I do like that Forced Exposure allows you to ply small clips of each song on the Album, in most cases.

Man, pulling some LP’s I have not listened to in a very long time....

Don Nix - In God We Trust. Shelter Records 1971. Recorded at Muscle Shoals Sound Studios.
.....it all depends....most gear rewards tube rolling, some voiced for the new tubes..not so much. The Herron is that way, the Croft not at all. My REF5se greatly benefited with an ancient NJ production NOS 6550 in the power supply....however, all the above greatly benefit by isolation. i prefer HRS but currently have the Herron under some Stillpoints as i work out a better shelf - the stillpoints may prevail....

fun rabbit.....hole...
got dry rub on a prime......might need US cleaner to get smoke particles off of me....

also Brian, Fremer lays out the Hagerman circuit as gain, phase splitter, gain. i would be inclined to change the gain stages in pairs, phase splitters last. i was trained by Vandy and Modjeski, and stayed at a holiday Inn.
The Doobie Brothers ‎– Toulouse Street (Warner Bros. 1972)

What a great album. Haven't played it in 35 years.
@tomic601

start with input gain stage first.

But, that would be the 12au7’s, right? Not the ax7’s.
I think I sent you the circuit/manual.

The new ax7’s are coming regardless 😉😁

I remember her but never bought any of her music.  Geffen is probably my least favorite of the (semi) major labels.  Let me down too many times.   Do you think it’s the production, or the product, or the music?
hey BK....Jim H is replying to ? on the Fremer Analog Planet review....i would ALSO ask him...
Fremer is not in control. He almost gusshed over the Spanish SS phono amp
Brian,

Absolutely, go down the path of isolation and vibration control.  It really pays off!  I use Symposium Acoustics products both for the platform and the rollerblocks.  The two products, when combined, provide a very positive outcome.  There is a ton of reading on their website which provides a very good education.  Symposium Acoustics (symposiumusa.com)   Have fun...
