Whats on your turntable tonight?

For me its the first or very early LP's of:
Allman Brothers - "Allman Joys" "Idyllwild South"
Santana - "Santana" 200 g reissue
Emerson Lake and Palmer - "Emerson Lake and Palmer"
and,
Beethoven - "Piano Concerto No. 4 in G Major" Rudolph Serkin/Ozawa/BSO

A long busy week, which almost always brings me to Brahms…

Karajan conducts Brahms

  • The Four Symphonies

Deutsche Grammophon 4LP box reissue, 1974, originally 1964
German release

Van Halen / S-T
1978 Warner Bros.

Debut album. Guitarist Eddie Van Halen plays what is widely regarded as one of the greatest guitar solos of all time on the cover version of the Kinks “You Really Got Me”.

Kate Wolf & The Wildwood Flower – Lines On The Paper (Owl 1977)

Died at 44 from leukemia. Why do the nicest folks die young when so many evil ones persist? 😔

Rhiannon Giddens With Francesco Turrisi – There Is No Other (Nonesuch 2019)

Joe Williams-Live Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Aerosmith-Get Your Wings Side 2

Rod Stewart-Greatest Hits Side 1

Mozart-Otto Klemperer(Angel 36129) Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Allison Moorer-Blood Side A

The Ken Peplowski Quintet-Sonny Side(CJ 376) Side 2 SQ Audiophile

Rival Sons-Head Down Side 1

Pat Metheny Group-Still Life(talking) Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Power was very clean tonight resulting in 4 Audiophile SQ recordings. Only Moorer and Rival Sons SQ got in the way(diminished) of the music. Close SQ call between Metheny/Peplowski but Metheny had less edge/sharpness and IMO a higher SQ upside.

Gregg Allman / Southern Blood
2017 Rounder

Released four months after his death, GA covers some favorites…I can’t get by his version of Garcia/Hunter’s “Black Muddy River” without a re-cue….or two…

Terry Allen And The Panhandle Mystery Band / Just Like Moby Dick
2020 Paradise Of Bachelors

So much to like here, great storytelling, music, sound quality

@noromance Somewhat similar pop rock styles Brian, less on the funk rock. More reminiscent to me of say… a dialed back and smoother pop/rock sound of Huey Lewis and The News. Ace’s big hit—you’ll remember it— is “How Long”.

I’d forgotten about “Midnight Runaway” on that Three Dog Night album…

The MoFi ’One Step’ Mingus Ah Um. While this record is good, I feel it does have a certain digital sheen to it that is obvious after one knows its ’history’. I say this, as I followed it up with the Tone Poet release of Breakin Point by Freddie Hubbard, which was mastered by Kevin Gray and from an all AAA tape. The difference in overall SQ ( at least on my system) is fairly easy to hear. The ’One Step’ Mingus is just a little less warm and a tad less airy sounding. Both good, but the TP has the better SQ, surprisingly!

@bslon I've never listened to them before. Like an English version of this...?

Three Dog Night – Seven Separate Fools (Dunhill 1972)

Ace / No Strings
1977 Anchor

In the mood for some Ace and Paul Carrack tonight…

^ which sounds so much better than the 2017 digital remaster that it's not funny.

Long day today!

Allegri, Mundy, Palestrina, The Tallis Scholars Directed By Peter Phillips – Miserere / Vox Patris Caelestis / Missa Papae Marcelli

Gary Karr, Harmon Lewis – Adagio D'Albinoni

Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht – Three Penny Opera - Original Cast Recording

Jay McShann – The Big Apple Bash

John Haley Sims, Harry Sweets Edison – Just Friends

Count Basie & Dizzy Gillespie – The Gifted Ones

Roy Harper - Flashes From the Archives of Oblivion

Leonard Cohen - Live in London

Tom Waits And Crystal Gayle – One From The Heart

The follow up to Van Halen

was "Jimi Hendrix at Monterey "

and Leo Kottke  "6 & 12 String Guitar "

@dabel

I just picked this up on the recommendation ( a good one at that ) of my guitar playing friend who grew up listen to VH , he can play Eruption  and all of Jimi Hendrix and Led Zeppelin .

I more of a Moody Blues , Pink Floyd & Jimi Hendrix king of guy on the Rock side.

Peter Frampton / Frampton@ 50
2023 Intervention, orig. 1972, ‘73, ‘75

Outstanding Frampton box from Intervention. Fabulous sound quality (far exceeds my originals), super quiet flat vinyl, really nice high end packaging. No. 1467 out of 2500.

Miami Vice-TV Soundtrack Side 1

John Waite-No Brakes Side 1

Blue Rodeo-Diamond Mine Side 2

Stephen Bishop-Careless Side B SQ*

Journey-Infinity Side 2

Lacy J Dalton-Survivor Side 1 SQ*

Had 3 near Audiophile SQ misses would need several playbacks to determine Audiophile SQ. If unfamiliar with "Careless" what an extreme top level singer/songwriter recording.

Miss Peggy Lee – Basin Street East Proudly Presents Miss Peggy Lee Recorded At The Fabulous New York Club (Capitol 1961)

Les Brown And His Band Of Renown – Concert At The Palladium 1953 Vol 1 (Coral 1955 mono)

Gerry Rafferty-North & South Side 1

Nielsen/Herbert von Karajan(2532 029) Side 1 SQ Audiophile

Eric Clapton-No Reason To Cry Side 1

Blood Sweat & Tears-Brand New Day Side B SQ Audiophile

Nothing had below average SQ tonight. Marsalis/Sedaka were very close to Audiophile SQ. Karajan/BS&T were also close in SQ. Neither recording has demo disc SQ but the edge goes to BS&T for a more organic SQ.
