Philly Joe Jones - Showcase on Qobuz A nice 1959 hard bop set with a tasty, drum heavy mix. I really like albums cut with drummers as leaders, you tend to get a percussion-centric production. I was inspired by melvinjames listening to Jimmy Cobb tonight. Probably my favorite is Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers - Free for All. The title track on that album is perfect controlled fury! |
Finishing up Shame - Drunk Tank Pink on Qobuz Hi-Res. Nice post-punk album. As soon as I finish this, I’ll be starting on a project to create a playlist on Qobuz I’ll call Audiogon Pop. I’ve been following a forum “Perfect Pop Songs”. https://forum.audiogon.com/discussions/perfect-pop-songs Lots of good songs I want to wrangle, plus lots of stuff I’m not familiar with. Might be a long evening... |
George Baker Selection - Paloma blanca (youtube) I made a mistake of mentioning it as a pop song, which it surely is, on another thread about perfect pop songs ( Perfect Pop Songs | Audiogon Discussion Forum ). Now it does not want to leave. I think it would continue playing even if I disconnected power on the whole street. |
Penguin Cafe Orchestra - Penguin Cafe Orchestra on Qobuz via 16f4's recommendation. Very interesting, I see they are often categorized as folk/neo-classical, and although I hear the references to minimalist classical (Reich, Glass, etc) I also sense they are adjacent to new age. If this group floats your boat you might check out the band Balmorhea! Not exactly alike but distant musical cousins, maybe. |

Think the soundtrack to several TV shows (maybe “Thirty-Something?”) or movies (“Telephone and Rubber Band” has been in several), more than a few commercials. Overall very pleasant and relaxing. |
I love this thread. I often end up listening to selections you all post, and I enjoy making new discoveries. I would like to ask, if you're so inclined, if when you post something that isn't extremely well known to include maybe a one sentence description of your take on what it is? That would make this really useful. Only if you have time and feel like doing it, of course! |
