Most of Alison Krauss' stuff is very well recorded and the instrumentation is all acoustic. No steel guitar, but you do have Jerry Douglas' awesome dobro on the last few recordings. Alison's most recent CD (Lonely Runs Both Ways) is excellent - both in content and recording quality.
Wizard, what a list. Something that would keep me busy. Thanks alot for your response.
Let's not forget Chet Atkins and Les Paul. Especially their two duet albums, Guitar Monsters and Chet and Les.
Willie Nelson (Teatro) is one I play a lot...almost all his stuff is very good recording quality, plus...I like Willie so I own many of his albums.

Martina McBride - "Timeless"

Just released a couple of weeks ago and it was recorded using old analog equipment. Great sound quality. This may well go down as a classic disc for her.
There is a Merle Haggard CD "Roots" that was recorded in his livingroom that he put out 2-3 years ago........... great music, great recording.
This may fall more in the "Newgrass" category than country, but I will add one more to the list:

Nickel Creek - Nickel Creek

I listen to Directv's channel 829, music station near 24/7 these days. Most all of it sounds pretty good to me.The reason my box sounds so good is I had Theta modify it with their digital board and a coax out. This dig. out goes into an Audiomecca dac. Sure cd sounds better but I never have to change cd's. I did pick up some Keith Whitley and the 3 I bought all sound just like what you want. It is very seldom I hear a crappy mix unless it's from the 60's.
