vintage Audio Research DAC2 DAC3

Can anyone guide me and point out the differences in the sound signature between the following devices?

Audio Research DAC2 Ultra Analog - I know this one, so I have a point of reference
Audio Research DAC3 MKI tubes
Audio Research DAC3 MKII tubes

I've searched the entire internet but haven't found a clear answer :/
I would be very grateful for help, because I like vintage devices from golden audio era, but I would like to avoid hit or miss choices

I am not familiar with these specific DACs. But I find AI to generally get it right. But a good starting point.

Audio Research DAC2 Ultra Analog

  • Sound Signature: Known for its warm, rich sound with a slightly forward midrange.

  • Resolution: 20-bit Ultra Analog DACs.

  • Tone: Offers a smooth and natural tonal balance.

  • Overall Impression: Provides a pleasant listening experience with a touch of analog warmth.

Audio Research DAC3 MKI

  • Sound Signature: Features a more neutral and transparent sound compared to the DAC2.

  • Converter: Uses a delta-sigma 1-bit differential converter.

  • Tone: Delivers a detailed and precise sound with good depth and clarity.

  • Overall Impression: Known for its musicality and ability to present a wide dynamic range.

Audio Research DAC3 MKII

  • Sound Signature: Similar to the DAC3 MKI but with further refinements.

  • Converter: Enhanced with 64x oversampling and 8x interpolation.

  • Tone: Provides an even more refined and detailed sound with improved transparency.

  • Overall Impression: Offers a seamless and natural presentation, often compared to high-quality vinyl playback.

Do you have a preference for any particular sound characteristic?

Used to own CD3 MkII and if its sound signature is of any indication it was relaxed, airy, detailed, slightly warm but not dark, big images, big stage.
I had it paired with ARC LS25 and Ref1 preamps into Pass X250.5 driving B&W N803. Wish I never sold that player…one of my audio mistakes…
