Variable Frequency Drive for Turntable

Hello there.  My Thorens TD145 doesn't like to play 45rpm any more.  New Thorens belt, all that, it just doesn't like to.  But it would be kind of keen to build a drive so I can change speeds with the flip of a switch.  Should I have any concerns about offending the motor in some way by overclocking it?

I would prefer responses from people with some experience, thank you.

I'm 99.9999 percent sure the TD145 uses an AC synchronous motor, so any of the popular motor controllers should work. Walker, VPI, or even DIY should be a-ok.
question I have is why wont it play 45's anymore? maybe there are other issues you have not found yet.
