Turntable platter problem

my Son called me and said that his Pioneer PLX-1000 while listening,  started to slow down and the platter just stopped. He said that this has been happening at random but its been more lately.  I've researched this and there is hardly any info on it except for some lame answers from people that I guess don't like this TT.   thanks for any info and would be greatly appreciated.
