what is the best new or used turntable to get for around 1000$

Pioneer PLX1000 - $699 + free shipping from various online sellers. This is an excellent direct-drive turntable that can compete with four-figure TTs! I bought one when I wanted to add a new production TT to my collection of vintage TTs. I chose to mount a Denon 103R mc cartridge ($300) on it. Read Herb Reichert’s positive review in Stereophile a few years ago!
I advise Quartz Locked Direct Drive. And,

encourage you to think long now. After a lot of years, single arm TT, I went Vintage Wood Plinth, Vintage QL DD, large for 2 tonearms, allows one to be a long arm.

Removable Headshell (standard headshell, not OEM custom shape) to allow changing from MC, MM, Mono if/when you get there.

Looks: Everyone says ’Technics 1200 .... I can’t tolerate the metal/plastic/techy/dj look, don’t need the speed controls ... or super advancements, so,

where’s the NEW QL DD with a Wood Plinth??? A few Belt Drive Wood ones exist.

It may be, if like me you don’t like the Technics/Pioneer TT LOOK, a USED one will have to be the answer.

did I forget to say, this TT is a terrific way to get into Vinyl, with it’s built-in optional Phono EQ, then, IF you get further into it ...

includes a new pre-aligned at540ml cartridge which costs: ($250. + tax). That's a darn good cartridge, which means the TT is only $500. (or, make offer, less)

Probably something in the Technics camp. Preferably with a dust cover. That way if interest in vinyl is lost, when one returns a decade later, remove the build up from the dust cover and carry on.
