"Blue Rondo a la Turk" on the Two Generations of Brubeck album. Wow.
There are many fine versions of this tune, but this one gets me dancing, clapping, fist-pounding, whatever, every time....and it's not easy to dance in, what, 9/8? I love tunes that grow, build, develop, and move through changes. This one just picks me up and takes me right along with it. Great melding of jazz and rock idioms, too. It's fun to imagine Dave Brubeck setting the groove and then sitting back to hear where his kids and their friends take it.
You can continue exploring Dave and the kids on Two Generations of Brubeck, "The Great Spirit Made Us All". And Chris Brubeck's rock/jazz band Sky King on "Secret Sauce".
For extra credit, give a "spin" to Chase, "Bochawa" from their last album, Pure Music.
Anyway, that's my two cents today.

David Gilmore "On An Island" Mofimadness, I dusted off my 30 some year old, well worn copy of REO "Riding The Storm Out" (I too, had a snow storm event) Mind you, this is my original copy from over 30 years ago in which I partied to frequently. Looking at it now, I'd be hard pressed to pay $1.00 for. After very slow steaming, and a good 6 minutes in my AD cleaner... Walla! (Should I say Violla?) It sounds great! This really is a damn good sounding (live) lp! Monkees: An underappreciated band! Ask Steven Stills? |
The way the story went as I remember it... Hobson contacted Fremer for his copy of "Rough Mix" to duplicate for the Classic Records release. Fremer provided his personal copy. It wasn't caught until later that Fremer's copy had a LAST sticker on the back jacket cover. If you own the Classic Records copy, look and you'll see. It really does blend in if you aren't looking for it. |
A (hopefully funny story)... I was at a local Music Matters event around 3 years ago in which M Fremer attended with one of his (shows). Somehow, a relevant opening appeared... ( I think the current talk was Classic Records)...I said from my back row seat,,, "like the LAST sticker on the "Rough Mix" lp? Fremer kind of bowed his head after he realized what I meant. |
Thomasz Stanko Quintet "So Nice" from Dark Eyes. 2009 ECM. This is like a theme from a movie that captures your life. You can’t quite recall the film (because it doesn’t exist) but the feeling comes over you that this is it. This captures it all. Been listening to this frequently since yesterday morning. The rest of the Album is brilliant as well, with Jakob Bro on guitar. |
