I travel a few nights a month for work so I have a Pelican case that holds a O2 headphone amp , tablet running Qobuz and a pair of Grado RS2e phones...
Travel system?
Anyone else miss good music when they travel? We travel quite a bit, and I'm always looking forward to getting home to listen to my system - especially after a couple of days of streaming low-res to a hotel or airbnb's alarm clock "stereo".
I was thinking about putting together a simple, small travel system. What I'm leaning towards:
Kef LSX Speakers
Cambridge Audio Minx X201 Sub
Chromecast Audio
I could put this all in a custom pelican-type case and check it in for flights. Should be the size of a roller-bag or smaller. A few of the pelican cases have roller wheels on them. There possibly would be room for cables and maybe some small iso-acoustic stands.
Anyone try this? Any experiences checking in such a system on a flight? If so, would be great to hear what you put together, and if it was worth the effort. I like relaxing on vacation - would be even better if I had some decent tunes.

It’s possible to achieve great sound for personal audio, with your choice of cans or buds, using either a cell phone or a dedicated personal player such as Astell and Kern. The two problems for me with personal audio are: 1) I don’t like anything in or on my ears for more than an hour, and 2) If traveling with my wife, she is excluded from the music or from talking with me. Bluetooth speakers are the most reasonable compromise. As others have noted, you can’t play music loud in hotels anyway. During the day we are usually out and about so it’s for early morning or late night background listening. The speakers are easily portable |
I travel a lot and I can't imagine my trip without music. My iPhone is full of different playlists, so I always take few power banks in order to listen to music all the time. Also, I like to read and can recommend a good list of books for traveling https://travelsites.com/travel-books/

I travel for work a LOT! I truly do not think I could be bothered to put together a portable system although it does sound like a great idea, but for me along with my suitcase, tools, rolling laptop case, just one more item to cause me to want to kill someone when fighting to get on a rental car shuttle! I do miss my main rig a lot but I do have couple pair decent iem phones to help on flights. And at the hotel I stream from phone or laptop via Bluetooth to a small Bluetooth/USB speaker. Not world class but as you cannot crank the vol up in a hotel room anyway without being anti social it works well enough to get me by. |
I do miss it and I don't know what to do with it. Like, a have a decent MP3 player with pak files only, high-quality earbuds it's not the same. I'm going to Tokyo soon https://worldcams.tv/japan/tokyo/shibuya-crossing and I decided just to put off listening to music. After all, the trip is a business one. I'll just shift to books. |
Have you heard or considered a Naim Muso or a Dynaudio Music? www.naimaudio.com/mu-so-special-edition www.dynaudio.com/home-audio/music |
I use an iPhone with about 200 GB of ALAC music. Also stream Tidal, or Qobuz in high resolution along with an iFi micro iDSD Black Label DAC. My earbuds are Phonak Audeo. The earbuds are very comfortable and sound outrageous, but unfortunately are no longer made. I prefer them when compared with my expensive Shure earbuds. If I travel by car I may also take my Audeze LCD-4 Headphones. These systems supply top quality music for me when I am traveling. |
