The Who's rock opera "TOMMY" Has there ever been a notable "VINYL REISSUE" ??
The above title is my question: Has there ever been a notable that is, good VINYL reissue of THIS OUTSTANDING PIECE OF MUSIC. I have seen CD's of it, but just Red Book standard level, or even re-mastered versions, but not on vinyl.
Thank you,
S.J.
Thank you to all who have responded. It has been enlightening and useful. I am aware of the Discogs site and probably will check it out again. . I have a copy of "Tommy" and it sounds good, but in anticipation of buying a better table and cartridge, I thought I would post this thread. I am not sure how old my copy is. The cover is in good shape; but, side four is marred by pops and clicks, no matter how much I clean it May have to consider the SACD version recommended by member "ron_ Hartman"

"I have never seen that London Symphony Orchestra copy for sale anywhere." I have one of those independent neighborhood stores(boarded up until who knows when) that something like that just magically shows up. Guess it will just be one of those finds when I'm not expecting. Discogs lists it also being released in the infamous "Quadraphonic" sound! |
You’ve made me break out my bought-the-first-week-it-came-out domestic pressing. Yeah, it had a lot of use back in the day, but it doesn’t seem any worse for wear. A lot of multi-miking and no shortage of artificial reverb, but clarity galore and just enough treble edge to lend it a genuine rock record veracity. Spacious soundstaging. Only the thoroughly worn jacket tips off how old it is. Thanks for getting me to haul it out! |
I had not even checked my copy but it is that one tablejockey. Sounds pretty good to my ears. I also have an excellent version by The London Symphony Orchestra from 1972. https://www.discogs.com/The-London-Symphony-Orchestra-Tommy/release/3340256 |
This one. https://www.discogs.com/The-Who-Tommy/release/515683 It's a 1973 MCA reissue. It might be hiding in the bin of your local store? I have a 1969 US Decca, that sounds great, but spotty. I have this later reissue, and it sounds quite good. I bet there are a few R-R owners still enjoying their 1969 copy. I can imagine a "modern" reissue plagued by the usual stuff-punched up bass, overall "CD" tone. |
