Mary Lou Williams
SOLO RECITAL
Pablo / OJCCD 1978 / 1998
Notes : As Duke Ellington once said of Mary Lou's playing and composing, she is both "always contemporary" and "always a little ahead."
Wiki : Mary Lou Williams (born Mary Elfrieda Scruggs; May 8, 1910 – May 28, 1981)[1] was an American jazz pianist, arranger, and composer. She wrote hundreds of compositions and arrangements and recorded more than one hundred records (in 78, 45, and LP versions). Williams wrote and arranged for Duke Ellington and Benny Goodman, and she was friend, mentor, and teacher to Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Tadd Dameron, Bud Powell, and Dizzy Gillespie.

Gordon bumped for Henderson MAYBE, so arguably Top 5 tenor? Depends on the moment.
Heck yeah I'm sure! 😉
|
Top 5 Tenor All Time!
Are you sure about that?
John Coltrane, Dexter Gordon, Lester Young, Coleman Hawkins, Sonny Rollins, maybe others.
Cheers
