She started singing gospel music and playing piano in church as a child, and also became interested in jazz and blues. Florence Price's symphonies. I know I've mentioned her name before on this website, but right now I'm on Idagio, streaming performances of her First and Third Symphonies and truly lovin' 'em. She's an African-American composer who was active during the first half of the 20th Century. Aaron Copland-esque. Tuneful. Big. Truly excellent sound quality. If DG recordings always sounded this spacious, dynamic and sweet I'd be the happiest guy on the planet. |
