Speaker and Cable Suggestions Please

Greetings, some time ago (maybe over a year ago) I asked for some advice as to what tube integrated amp to buy. It was to be my first tube amp and I needed a lot of help. After a long search and much study, I decided on an ARC VSi75. Now I need your help again. I currently have a pair of Focal Aria 926. My listening room is small, 15'7" x 11'7" (4.75m x 3.5m).

I'm looking for a speaker for a near-field situation that extends into the upper mids and high frequencies. Since my amp puts out 75 watts of output, I need something with decent sensitivity, say at least 91db. I also need new speaker cables. I'm using circa 1980s Monster Cable now.

One more consideration, I have lost some hearing due to a neurological autoimmune condition. Yet, when I auditioned Paradigm Persona Bs recently through an ARC, I could here all the sound that I remember hearing when I was a teenager. The point being, I know that upper range I'm chasing is possible I just don't know if it's achievable on my budget. I have about $4,000 to spend on speakers and cables. I was thinking about DH Lab Q-10 for cables and the rest for speakers. What do you guys think? I don't mind buying used. Thank you.

@diminishedchord Are you getting the speakers to listen by yourself or for many people or even in another room? If it is just for yourself, and you like the uber detail of the Paradigm Persona B, then the RAAL SR1a earphone would work amazingly with your amp. It is very much like a 2-channel near-field presentation.

I know a few people that sold very expensive systems, such as Magico based, to go with just the SR1a. I finally bettered my SR1a system (for late night) with my 2-channel in my office and Livingroom, but it was not easy.

I am using a 20-watt Schitt Aegir for my setup.

Thanks @marco1. Your sentiments seems to be the consensus in this discussion. I am going to try some old Paradigm monitors I’ve had in the garage for about ten years first. If they don’t work out, I will then try some Aerial Acoustic Model 6s I’ve had in my closet for a while. I remember really liking the sound they produced. If I wash out with those, then I’ll be on the look out for some used Dynaudio Contour 20i or may consider Fritz Speaker Carrera be. Sadly, Paradigm Persona Bs are way out of my budget. Thank you to all in this forum for your considered suggestions. I feel a lot more comfortable going forward.

Speakers:

  1. Focal Chora 826 - Since you already have Focal speakers and liked the Paradigm Persona Bs, you might enjoy the Focal Chora 826. They offer a balanced sound with a focus on the midrange and highs.

  2. KEF LS50 Meta - These compact bookshelf speakers have excellent sensitivity and high-frequency performance. They're well-regarded for their imaging and detail.

  3. Sonus Faber Lumina III - Sonus Faber is known for its exquisite midrange and high-frequency reproduction. The Lumina III offers great aesthetics and sound quality.

  4. Dynaudio Evoke 20 - Dynaudio speakers often excel in detail and clarity. The Evoke 20 is known for its neutrality and crisp high frequencies.

  5. Bowers & Wilkins 705 S2 - B&W speakers are famous for their accurate and detailed sound. The 705 S2 is a compact, high-performance bookshelf option.

Cables: DHLab Q-10 is a good choice for speaker cables. They offer a balance between performance and affordability.

In terms of the budget breakdown, you can allocate around $3,000 for speakers and $1,000 for cables, although the exact distribution can vary based on your preferences and priorities.

Remember that personal preference plays a significant role in speaker selection, so if possible, try to audition the speakers in your listening environment or a similar one to ensure they meet your expectations, especially considering your hearing condition.

Also, consider the placement of your speakers and room acoustics as they can significantly impact the perceived high-frequency performance and overall sound quality. Acoustic treatments may be worth considering as well.

Lastly, don't forget to explore the used market, as you can often find high-quality speakers at a more affordable price. Just make sure to inspect them thoroughly and ensure they are in good condition.

Ultimately, your quest for that upper-range sound is achievable within your budget, and I hope these recommendations help you find the perfect speakers to complement your ARC VSi75. Enjoy your music!

MoFi SourcePoint 8 or 10 by established speaker guru Andrew Jones.  Great reviews.

after you are settled with your amp, get a few different manufacturers of cables and listen to what pleases you.....(I think Audioquest is for me)...but listen for yourself

+1 DH Labs - good reputation

Many of this forum love the Silversmith FIDELIUM speaker cables - seems to be a rare audio bargain. Seems within your budget and maybe save $ buying used

I love my aerial acoustic model 6's. Is that what you were using before the focals?
