SOtM Streamer Advice

Looking for a bit of advice/personal experience with SOtM streamers.

I am currently using the following streaming set up, SOtM network switch with linear power supply, into Track Audio Smoothlan, into SOtM SMS 200 Neo Mini, into a SOtM Dac (on loan from my son) both Streamer and DAC are powered by a linear power supply, Ethernet cables are Supra up to the Smoothlan, Furutech Lan 8 from the Smoothlan into to SOtM mini, and Supra Excalibur USB into the DAC.

I have always been a vinyl enthusiast, but I have to say I am very pleased with my Streaming set up.

So the question is, I have the opportunity to buy a SOtM Ultra Neo SE (unable to demo) and after doing some research I am a little bit wary of loosing the musicality the Mini Neo gives me for what I have read etc is a more clinical (Hifi) sounding SOtM Ultra Neo SE. Is there anyone that has experience of listening to or upgrading from the Neo Mini to the SOtM Ultra Neo SE or the SOtM Ultra Neo and could you pass on your experience/thoughts.

I do not have experience with the SOtM gear, but I think that you will like the improvements that a better server will bring. Typically you will get a cleaner sound with a lower noise floor, primarily due to better clocking and reduced EMI in the server. This will not result in a more clinical sound, but you will hear more of the music.

If you upgrade and find the sound too detailed or clinical, then I would look elsewhere for the source, with your DAC being the likely suspect since you like your system already for vinyl.

I have had a number of digital 'aha' moments that caught me by surprise. (e.g. USB cables matter, somehow) I say go for it.

@zlone correct. A better streamer should lower noise floor which improves resolution, transparency. Streamers don't color the sound or change tonality, a lower noise floor may uncover gremlins elsewhere in system. I always advocate going for best streamer one can afford, fearing it may uncover some defect in system isn't a good excuse for not going for it. Thing is the defect is already there, providing more resolution provides an opportunity to hear those defects and attend to them.

In my experience streamers can sound very different.  I have both an Ian Canada I2S rig and a Mercury V3, both based on the RPi and both running the same software, but with different build philosphies. I like them both but they sound completely different into my Chord Qutest.  I think the OP would be wise to hold off on his purchase.  He might want to go over to Audiophilestyle and ask about it there.  There’s a whole forum devoted to streaming and entire threads about SOtM gear.  People are pretty honest there in a pleasant way and he’ll probably get some good feedback.

Forgot to mention I ran SOTM SMS200 Neo some years ago, this as Roon Endpoint. Moved to Sonore OpticalRendu for Endpoint, optical conversion worthwhile improvement for me.
