I think OP should include the Oppo BDP-105 in the comparison. I have both a BDP-105 and an XA5400ES in my rack. Both are superb, though they sound a bit different. Broadly generalized, the Oppo seems a bit more detailed, the Sony a bit smoother. Preference, I think, is system and listener dependent.
