@jay23 no, while I use Galileo LE for my CD player and pre amp I’ve always leaned to AQ for power amps. I will say that the Galileo LE was only a slight improvement over WEL on my pre amp so I suspect the Dragon would be very nice (based on how much better than the WEL it is), however as that’s an 8’ run I’m not in the market to change it.
Overall I tend not to engage in shoot outs or head to head comparisons tending more to pick a line and stick with it until my needs change or there’s an upgrade in the line. This holds for all my components as well as accessories. My belief is that it is more important to learn how to optimize the system synergy hence I avoid changes that could throw things out of kilter

Even the Tornado outperforms the Wel Signature powercables. This is how big the step is Audioquest made with their new powercables. Their conditioners we do not sell. Based on the fact that they are not good enough in our world. |

I have been in the AV industry for years and have contacts in this industry. One of my friends and colleagues works directly for AQ so I learned this information first hand. AQ has developed proprietary geometries for the positive, negative and ground cables in their new power cords. They do not disclose what the varying geometries are but they have learned that particular designs work better for different poles. This is part of the magic that apparently helps these cables to sound so good! This is ground breaking if you ask me and I am excited to try one in my system. I will hopefully be acquiring my first one in a couple of months and will

Hello. I watched talks about Audioquest power cables; I understand that between Dragon and Hurrican would be a difference, but that difference was not very detailed ...! I'm not referring to the price difference. I would like to buy an Audioquest power cable for my Hegel H 300 amplifier and would like to know which of the two cables offers deeper sound and stronger bass sound?
Has the Dragon Power Cable (which is a combination of copper and silver) a bass and lower frequent sound better than Hurricane that is only copper? Has anyone tested the two cables and can give a correct answer because I'm interested in this feature?

I have a couple of Hurricanes - a 20 amp on my amp and a 15 amp on my home theater processor. They seemed great at first, but now I think they might be a bit too smooth for me. Yes, they are the quietest of the many power cords I’ve had, and yes, they do bass very well. For me, after break in, they seem a bit bottom heavy in balance and a little too smooth on top.
Anyone else noticing the same, or are you all happy with your Hurricanes?

from my limited experience, every component or cable tend to be harsh at start, gets smoother with time. depending on your equipment performance/transparency, you might like or hate that initial harshness. I have noticed this the most with my Firebird zero speaker cable, also with other cables/components when new.
in my humble opinion, AQ cables don't really have a sound signature of their own, they don't "color" the sound. so if you feel the sound is too soft and bass heavy after full break in, its possible this could be your equipment actual sound. I could be wrong, but I had a custom made amp which was warm and soft. I kept trying sub-consciously to enhance the details in my sound by introducing high rez silver cables, a high end DAC, a good transport. but that veil is not really gone. reached all the way to a speaker cable upgrade. after the firebid zero speaker cable fully broke in, I realized that amp should go. bought a diablo 300 integrated, and the cables passed the signal honestly as it did with the previous amp. the difference was; no more dullness of any sort, just the heavenly detailed, extended highs, sensational mids, extremely controlled and deep bass; i.e, the excellent sound of gryphon diablo 300.
AQ cables (the high-ish end ones) just simply allow you to hear your equipment to its maximum potential, without any alteration to signal or favoring any frequency over the other, while keeping noise incredibly low. wither it was a power cord, speaker cable, IC, or a digital cable. I could be wrong again with such statement, but I'm really happy with my full loom AQ here. just waiting my new Firebird PCs (1 High current, 2 source) to replace 3 thunders i currently have. I can only wonder what they would do, cause I have heard hurricane and I loved what it does vs the thunders. I truly shouldn't have left better PCs till the end, esp. with many knowledgeable people claiming the change the sound the most, but that mistake is soon to be rectified ))

@riie they simply pass through what’s in the rest of the chain, ie they won’t mask it but nor will they emphasise it. Sibilance is natural and present in many recordings and the hurricane series from AQ do a great job of preserving the natural sound of the original acoustic, sans editorial |

I have 2 Aq tornado power cords and 2 Aq hurricane power cords. I have 1 hurricane 20 amp as the main from a Aq nrg Edison outlet to a Aq Niagara 5000. Then a hurricane running a MF dac. A tornado running a MF A5 cd player. Then a tornado running a MF amp. And for speakers I'm using a pair of Nola KO'S. The Aq power cords replaced Cabledyne premier 10 gauge power cords. I'm more than satisfied. The combination of the Aq power cords have given my system a much more open airy bold natural sound. A friend described it as air to burn

You know I had all Hurricane power cords in my system. The one thing that I didn't like from the beginning was their stiffness. They are so stiff, they pulled a couple of my components to the side. As mentioned by another Audiogon member, after extended listening I agree that it's a bottom up cable. Long story short, I sold all of my Hurricanes after listening to Clarity Cables Vortex power cords. The Vortex are even across the Audio spectrum and are very flexible compared to Hurricanes. As always, no absolutes in Audio, only preferences and cables are system dependent. |
After having a 20A HC Hurricane connected to my Niagara 7000 for a year now, I too began to wonder if the power cord was too bottom up in sound. I really wanted to try a Dragon but, lets just say I’m not rich.
I decided to make one on my own. I used 10 gauge .9999 pure soft silver wire and the best Teflon oversized tubing I could find. I covered the tubing with some granite mesh from Parts Express. I terminated the cables with Furutech F-50 NCF fittings. Heck, I even braided it like the Dragon.
To my surprise the Hurricane was holding back my system. My new power cord brought so much more life to the music it is awesome.
Now, if I could only figure out how to make one of those dialectic things...
BTW, my Hurricane is now connected to my Audioquest 1200 which powers my 2 JL F-113 subs.

After a few years of experiences with the Hurricane power cables I am wondering what are people’s thoughts are now due to newer advanced technologies in competitors power cables. For example, the new Shunyata Alpha NR2 power cable fairs well in most audio reviews and customer feedback. I wonder if the Shunyata Alpha NR2 has leapfrogged ahead in terms of using current technology to make a great new generation of power cable.
I know that power cables are individual choices based on listening preferences and system qualities which drive the purchase decision. But, one can get a general consensus on products by reading forums and reviews, as long as there are not many contradictory statements (outliers) your able to obtain a “feel” of the product through reading.
Do you think the Hurricane still competes with brands priced the same or higher now? This is an open ended question based on what I stated in paragraph 2 above. My belief is that the Hurricane is still a great value for what it offers, but as technology advances, the new kid on the block may be the Cats meow. Thoughts. I am speaking directly about the new Shunyata Alpha NR2 for comparison purposes.
Any thoughts on this subject are appreciated. |
I replaced stock power cord on modded Parasound A21 with Hurricane. (See my profile for description of complete system.) Wow. Like waking up a sleeping bulldog. Remarkable increase in contrast and color across the spectrum.
