Thanks for the great review.
Have you tried the triode mode? I am interested in knowing the difference.
Review: Antique Sound Labs Hurricane Tube amp
I have a pair of ASL1008DT 100wpc monoblocks in my main tube system. After replacing the signal tubes with 6sn7 Tung-Sols and the power tubes with a couple of matched quads of 6550EHs these guys give me all I could ask. Fast, tight, tube midrange (but not lush) and controlled bass. Contrary to the review I have opened up the chassis on my amps and have found the build quality to be quite good. Clean shiny solder joints, bundled, orderly wiring, and good quality tube sockets, caps, resistors and wiring. Stainless chassis and IEC power input. The stock PC (good quality 16ga) was adequate but (this being the brand of the month) was replaced by me. I can't see a company spending a lot on a stock PC as everybody has their own tastes and will replace the provided cord anyway (if they are into that sort of thing) |
Thanks all. I enjoyed commenting on this fine amp! Sid, no I have not tried the triode mode yet, but will soon. Zorpman- As to the build quality, I have not looked into mine at all. I got this info from others. I'm glad to hear yours is in fine shape! As to the 6550's, I may try them some time later. P.S. I just ordered better power cords. |
RWD, Very thoughtful, informative and highly accurate review of the ASL Hurricanes. I am sure with the Ottorino Respighi's I Pini di Roma played through the amps in concert with a high resolution system, one might even be able to hear an "ago di pino" quiver as the Roman army marches by! Hyperbole for sure but these amps resolve like none others that I have heard. As regards the variability of build you are right on...the product build does vary from set to set even within a matched pair. To address Zorpman's observation on the build quality of his pair, "to be quite good," ...quite good is not good enough when consistency, reliability and standardization, regardless of price, must be de rigueur and not a caveat. Despite the variable picadillos reported, these amps are very special indeed as attested to in RWD's review and in the many positive remarks offered. Continued happy listening to all! |
Very nice review, Rick, seems to me you should be hosting an NJAS meeting soon! Glad to see the amps are what you had hoped. Pity you have so many tubes there, though, as I may be selling my stash of Gold Lion KT88s... By the way, if the power cords you ordered are the ones I think they are, you should be in for a nice surprise. |
A great review can make the reader a participant and in very rare instances, I mean rare, enable the reader to truly relate to what the reviewer is describing. You have succeded most admirably in that respect Rick, your review of this amplifier is of the highest order, it put me there with you, great job! |
RWD: What was your impression of your amps at the earliest stages of break in (ie., the first ten hours)? Mine were turned on, literally, 3 hours ago. I re-read Harry's (HP) review, but saw nothing about the stages of break-in (as once was his habit in olden days). Mine "sounds" good,as far as soncis go, but nothing special at this moment. I can, however, note that the dynamic "jump" is immediately evident. What is also evident is that the tube biasing changes quite rapidly. Already, several of the tubes have jump to 500mv and many of them slid downward to 199mv and under! With this variation in individual tube settings, the sound gets slightly screechy and congested, although, once the tubes are re-biased to 350mv (for the first 5 hours), the presentation becomes considerably more vivid (not "transparent")and the instruments sound more as individuals in a group. Fascinating. The music itself, aside from the sonic arena, sounds beautifully engaging. So, again, what were your amps like from the start? |
Your assessment is right on!! Out of the box I noticed the immediate gain in volume and the great stage presentation. However, as I noted, there was a great deal that need to settle down. Until the tubes (KT88's) got cooking (70-100 hours) everything was on the brighter side. You must change the 6sn7's however...do it soon...it will be noticed. The biasing was also tricky at the beginning. I needed to bias every few hours (once a listen) and then it started to settle in. Feel free to e-mail me (anyone else is welcomed) and I will happily give you a call to discuss this via phone. P.S. Last week I replaced my power cords to Empowered Cords....Oh boy...........these are super....more to come! |
Russ....Yes the Empowered Power cords are a winner....I must listen to them a bit longer and add an addendum to my review.....What is truly amazing is the low cost!!! As to the KT88's...hummmmm....got to think about it???? HUMMMMM.... SUTTS, Hi! This is a bit difficult for me to answer as we both have different speaker systems. The Confidence Total Victory's are, from what I hear and you say, excellent speakers. I must hear them for myself! As to bi-amping your system with the 'canes on the bottom....I think you have an excellent idea! Keep it in the family (ASL) and keep the cost down! Try it out and let us know....please |
Rwd, I'm glad for you that everything seems to be going as hoped for with your purchase, and enjoyed reading your thoughtful review. If I had known that knew HP and had listened with him in the past, I wouldn't have been quite so surprised that someone could haul off and order something like these sound-unheard based on one review. My one experience with ASL was their headphone amp, which, ironically enough, I liked the build quality of (excepting the unsensually thin faceplate) but not the sound, which was excessively colored in an old-timey tube/transformer way, and wound up returning it. I'd love to hear these go against my VTL MB-185 Sig's, about the same price and power. Check out my latest thread http://forum.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/fr.pl?aamps&1059884645&2&3&4& for continuing adventures and let me know if your tetrode/triode switch experiences are at all similar... |
Hello Zaikesman...thanks for your kind words....As I said in the review, it was mostly the cost ($4.400) that got my mouth watering....Although I have spent time with HP in the past we did not always agree on equipment. His IRS's were good...but not great! However, the QRS/1-D's were one of the most revealing and involving system I ever heard. Someone should put the system back on the market. I will check your threads. BTW.....there is an open invitation to you if you have time to stop by and listen...I am in the NYC tri-state area! |
Thanks for the nice review. These amps have been on my radar for a while. 1. I replaced the ASL supplied 6SN7 tubes with NOS Sylvania's from Andy's Vintage Tube Service. Which particular Sylvania's did you use? I'm in the market for NOS 6SN7. |
Hi Mingles, I am not certain which ones I purchased. However, they were Sylvanias. I did sell my 'canes recently. They were breaking down quite a bit. I finally replaced them with a pair of Mac's 275 in mono. I hope you have a newer version of the Hurricanes as the originals were quite good sonically but not very good reliably. The original 'canes had a marvelous sound stage and a delicacy to them that brought you very close to the absolute sound!!!! Rick |
I purchased a pair of Hurricane DT's last month. I'm very impressed with them. I also had a problem with hum. I had purchased all new Tung-Sol 6sn7 tubes that were supposedly "low noise". Once I installed those tubes I got a hum, even with the pre-amp turned off. I sent them back and purchased some NOS tubes and they are dead quiet in the system. Not sure why. I run this amp in Triode mode and the sound has more body than any other amp I've heard. The soundstage is amazing. It's incredibly different than anything I've ever heard. As good as it is, watch out for the tube issue... I think this is a pretty picky amp. The 6sn7's can make a big difference in sound quality. My current components: Audio Research SP-11MKII Technics SP-10MKII with SME V tonearm and ZYX r-1000 Airy3x Vandersteen 3A signiture Previous Amps: Counterpoint SA-220 Counterpoint NPS-400 Counterpoint NPS-400 MKII Modified NAD 216 THX |
Old Thread not sure anyone involved is still present but recent used purchases of a pair of DT200 for my infinities as well. I have the RS-1b's as well as other Infinity's and am currently driving a pair of restored QLS-1's with the amps. They pushed out my pair of V12i Cary Mono Blocks. Just much more dynamics and more authority and effortless control. I am needing to relisten to my whole collection all over again and that can take a live time. Being used I am unsure of any upgrades to them but for sure plan on some purchases of good 6SN7's. As for Preamps I have an ASL 2002 class A tube preamp, along with a couple of models of Cary tube preamps, source is mainly a Technics SP10-MkII restored, with numerous carts.. |
