TUBES 6922 pinched waist Two things:1. Bad news: the word is that they are almost all monophonic. (amplify environmental vibration).2. Good news: They cannot be faked. Only Amperex made anything that looks like them.
House Amperage vs Stereo Amperage Sean has a point, but... If an load device has the ability to draw more than 15 amps (steady state) it will not be certified by UL to be furnished with a standard Nema 5-15 (straight two prong one ground)power plug. If your product is designed to ...
House Amperage vs Stereo Amperage If you stand on a wet concrete floor and place a finger over the positive and negative poles of capacitor of a recently turned off amplifier you will find (via your hair being on fire) that energy is, indeed, stored in capacitors, not transformers...
Least Controversial, Reasonably Priced AC Upgrades Transformers are usually 96-98% efficient-this means that they convert 2-4% of their rated current to heat. Most units are designed to heat to 115C (@250F)maximum. Heat is generated regardless of load. It is a good idea to place a HD switch (disco...
Least Controversial, Reasonably Priced AC Upgrades Some high value added additions that should cost you very little if you have a electrician already on site:Install a whole-house surge protector at the main service (breaker) panel-Square D, or Cuttler-Hammer are always available on Ebay for zilch...
Tubes for Sonic Frontiers Line 2SE I have two SF Line 2s (no SE)The 6h23n's are great tubes to tighten up an overly "tubey" sound (such as in my all tube system). To get more of the "tubey" sound (in my solid state system)I go with A-frame Amperex in the v1/Lv1 (first pair). This i...
Sonic Frontiers- Quality and Reliability? I have an SFL-1 (hybrid); SFL-2 (all tube); and two SF Line 2's (one in my SS system one for my tube system). As you can see I am a real Sonic Frontiers fan. No reliablity problems at all on any of the preampts (or power amps) in 10 years.Great so...
Electrical Safety Tip Remember any lamp over 50w anywhere on the telephone pole transformer that does not have 10ga wiring and cryo-treated sockets will degrade the audio performance of your equipment (and that of every house on the block) by 13.499876%.My ears can tel...
What tubed preamp that is not too fussy ? Get a Sonic Frontiers SFL-1. One tube, ultra-long life, wonderful sound and build quality. $350-450 USD used.
Sonic Frontiers Line 2SE vs. SFL2 I have both an SFL-2 and a SF Line 2 connected to both SS and tube systems.I find little to argue between them. In the Line 2 I found that NOS Amperex 6dj8 (orange globes), which are reasonably priced, worked best in my systems (both SS and tube)....
Home theater cabling question Another thought. Your new plasma will have DVI input(s). Getting a DVD with DVI output (very inexpensive, even now) will upgrade that viewing source by an order of magnitude by being 100% digital with no conversion. The DVI input on your plazma wi...
Topaz Transformet Placement Some thoughts:1. Remember that transformer is, at most, 96% efficient at maximum current (less efficient at lower current draw) and therefore converts at least 4% of watts into heat. Further, a large majority of transformers hum. Its a good idea t...
Whatever happened to REAL "owners manuals" ??? The Apt-Holman Preamp Manual-Still a classroom textbook of preamp and phono amp design and theory.
tube tester compatibility Actually the Hickok (I own three)are very iffy on the 6299/8dj8 tubes. I always test this series of tube on my B&K rather than the Hickok's.
Have experience with the MAS GRAY interconnect? I love the MAS Gray on tube gear. (Marantz 6000/Mensa ART DI/O; SF Line 2; ASL Hurricane). I use the MAS for DI/O>Line 2 and Line 2>Hurricanes. Might be a little bright for full solid state but great on tube gear. |
