"new" Joni Mitchell album

Today I bought the just released "Songs of A Prairie Girl" that I though was a new album. It turns to be a collection of songs from previously released albums with the exception of a remixed song and one that was edited. There is no clear indication on the cover that it is re-released material.

There is sticker that says " A new collection curated by Joni Mitchell" that is so ambiguous to me that it says they are trying to hide the fact that these are old recordings. If you have a limited collection of Joni Mitchell or none at all it is a fine collection of songs, but I have an extensive collection so I would never have bought this if I had known what it was.

Shame on them for deceiving me or shame on me for being deceived?

How did you miss the song titles? That should have made it obvious the 'collection' was made up of previously released tracks.

If the album has not been previously released, then it is technically a 'new' collection, however misleading it may sound.

I have noticed that usually these compilations are followed by a recording of new songs. That has been her pattern, and I imagine a little creative advertising would not go amiss at this juncture in her career where money and support are not what they were.

Your disappointment registers some deja vu here. However, any disc from the usually quite well done recycler Rhino label may have served to tipoff a savvy buyer. One also might imagine an extensive Joni collector would have his/her pulse on her catalog, even upcoming releases. Verdict: shame on you! but I bet it's still a great listen.

You guys are right about a few of the song titles. I recognize 2 but most are lesser known. I just counted 18 Joni Mitchell albums in my collection so in my defense I don't know the names of all the songs. I was in a buying frenzy anyway and didn't really look them over.

Oh well, it is nice collection.

In a recent interview (in New York Magazine I believe) Joni said that the songwriting muse had deserted her. She explained that was her reason for the album of standards, but that was a couple of years ago. The interview was within the past two months.

I for one certainly hope she finds it again.

I actually prefer the way she sounds now. Her voice has more character than in her younger days.

Does that mean with being reunited with the daughter she gave up for adoption at 16 or 17(?), her pain and anguish are now gone?
