I have owned some Cary gear. If you want to squeeze more bass out of the SLI-80, I'd suggest one of the PS Audio cables. For the CD player, I'd go with Shunyata. Can't speak to Kimber unfortunately |
Can't comment on Cary synergy but both cables are excellent. Now using Vipers on amps and Kimber PK10 Gold on CDP. Kimbers may be a touch warmer than the Vipers. The Vipers might be a tad quieter on source components direct from the wall. Through my Cyclops they are neck and neck on noise. If I had another PK10 I would try them on amp duty to compare. |
Jakecanada, I use VH Audio AirSines with my Cary mono blocks. The power cords turned those amps into much better components. I was shocked at the difference. A used AirSine might be close to your price range. It might well be worth the wait for one to come up used. |
Furutech are currently my cable of choice - they bring a dynamic to the music I have not found with the other cables I have tried.
Once I heard the Furutech I stopped looking |
Brownsfan has a great recommendation, I have been told alot of good feedbacks on the VH Audio power cables for the money, Its a good chance of a home run! |
I've had lots of Cary gear through the years and my experience after trying many cable types has always come back to Synergistic Research. I have no affiliation with this company but there products have always been stellar in any of my Cary system's. |
@ Brownsfan, Hi, I took a peek at the VH Audio Internet site, I have to say I really liked what I saw!, not only do they carry their own brand, they carry alot of stuff, you can litterally make your own cables thru them!, and they had different brands of tweaks etc..., Man, for $800.00 a 6 ft Airsine power cord, I believe its the best bargain based power cords on the market!, congrats on a great choice you made!,, cheers! |
The Kimber gold is a great cable who does everything right, nothing wrong. The cheaper Purist Audio cables are also an option. Just take your time and please compare before you buy! |
Audiolabyrinth, Chris a really good guy to deal with and he knows his stuff. He caries stuff he has tried and finds to be good bang for the buck items. His approach is to shun marketing expenses, thereby keeping his prices very low. He relies on his happy customers to spread the word. I have 4 of his airsines and one symmetry XLR in my system at this point. VH audio products compete well with pieces well above their price points in my opinion. |
As fate would have it, unless the power cord is broken in on a cable burn-in system AND cryo'd there is just no way that a stock power cord, at any price, is going to be able to compete in today's high end world. If I were an exhibitor at CES or any audio show I certainly wouldn't consider going in with stock power cords, not by a long shot. |
I find that power cords are the most important cable to be used in the system. I made my own as was suggested above. I used VH Audio...Accrolink wire with top of the line Oyeida or Furutech connectors. I have an all Ayre system. Its interesting that the Furutech ended cable sounds best used with the power amp, and the Oyeida ends sound best with the preamp, or silver disc player. If I use the Oyeida on the power, and the Furutech on the preamp, it doesn't sound as good. ..just goes to show you how sensitive these relationships can be. |
Check out the Sablon Petit Corona or a used Gran Corona at that price range |
If you haven't done so - upgrade your outlets
I like Pass & Seymour MRI outlet from Take Five Audio - around $25 - but there are many other worthy outlets out there from PS Audio, Furutech etc..
They clamp the pins so much better than the standard outlets and make a superior electrical connection |
Sablon Audio Gran Corona is fantastic. Very musical cord. One cord transformed my system. |
Power cords wull sound different in different kit -- pure and simple. BRAND X may or may not sound better than BRAND Y on your particular system.
SHORT ANSWER: without actually auditioning them you will never know which works best and you may introduce one that sounds like crap in your system regardless of what the reviews and Marketing 1010 testimonials may offer up.
To add to the confusion, certain hardware kit has a clear and marked preference for their own brand of power cables that usuually also best all other comers : (e.g inter alia, NAIM, REGA, LFD) Why? they are manufactured and "tnued?" to that kit hallmarks
YOUR TAKE-AWAY: experiment and test the alternatives and discount most of the ad hoc anecdotal personal testimonial noise. |
I can confirm that Naim sound amazing with Furutech power cables
Much better than their crappy stock cable :-)
But then ALL the brands in my system sound great with Furutech power cables :-) |
