Perplexed

Hey my dear audiophile friends , I just had to post this , I'm an audiophile on a budget . I recently just for an opportunity to up grade to a separate Amplifier and preamp.

The Amplifier is a Anthem MCA 5mkii and the Anthem AVP 20mk ii

There in excellent used condition hooked up to the Paradigm S2 , Paradigm Signature Trio and Paradigm cinema bookshelf for rears as well as a Veladigm sub

I also have an Outlaw Audio RR 2150 which I've had for years maybe ten or more

Well I was hoping the Anthem would  sweep the floor against the Outlaw,  but to my surprise the Outlaw out preformed the Anthem in terms of clarity sound staging and detail,  Wow was not expecting that  my Wife even said that the Outlaw sounds 3 times better go figure

The Anthem combo sounds good for home theater but in 2 Channel listening it is no comparison to the Outlaw in musicality

Just goes to show you don't listen to magazine publications

In general Home theater and two channel are in two completely separate leagues. Two channel stuff is just going to blow away AVPs.

Reviews are the foundation for gaining knowledge along with whatever you can observe yourself. But, the source is critical. Read The Absolute Sound, Stereophile, and Hi_Fi +. The other stuff… well, make sure you have a huge knowledge base before reading them.

Puttimg together a high end Home Theater is a completely different thing. Different design requirements and focus. The video portion distracts you from the real details of the sound… so bass is frequently accentuated to add emphasis… a really low noise floor is not as important. Whole different thing. I have a high end home theater as well as my two channel systems.
